Not a physician but #1, good question! As for #2, while I do get a flu shot every year (partly because my son is a type 1 like UncleWede), I wait until later in the season as they have a better feel for what strain is running rampant and get the adjusted vaccine. #3 There is a nasal mist though I seem to recall hearing it's not as effective in terms of immune system response and therefore effectiveness in preventing flu.
Back to #2, the flu virus is always mutating so the new strain in any given year may be different enough so that the antibodies you have from earlier shots/infections may not protect you. At the end of the day it's kind of like buying extended warranty on your car. Given that there is no cost for this warranty, I take it. Edit: And I see Marcus beat to some of my points!

No it means if you have health insurance, you are paying for it in your premiums whether you get it or not. There is no additional cost to get it if you have health insurance. Some employers also offer it for free at the office and I’m certain there are programs for the poor to get them for free even without health insurance.

There is essentially no cost for the person receiving the vaccine. Nearly all health insurance plans, mine included, cover 100% of the flu shot without any co-pay or deductible. There are also plenty of locations that offer the shot for free to those who wish to have one, including many employers. For those on government assistance, the shot is provided at no cost within most hospitals, public health offices, and drug stores.

This was a rhetorical question. The point I was trying to make is that it isn't free - somebody pays, either through direct costs, increased taxes, increased health insurance costs, or reduced company profits.

It is a way I'd really like to see the US health care change in many other areas, but that would mean the US culture would have to change, which isn't happening anytime soon. We love our shitty for us/over portioned food that leads to many health issues that are fairly easy to prevent. |

This, right here. Getting people vaccinated against the flu results in significantly less ER visits (because, let's face it, many people in the US use the ER as their primary care physician, for various, usually bad, but valid for them, reasons). Less ER visits means less expensive claims the health insurance companies have to pay out, all for the low cost of the flu vaccine.

Agreed. Most people don't realize it, but the common, average, everyday flu is a killer. Literally, people die from it, on a semi-regular basis.
But hey, I don't think it's necessary to get the flu vaccine, because I know better than those crazy scientists and doctors! Jenny McCarthy told me it might give me the aids, or maybe autism!

Yes, we used to think that the flu was caused by an evil dwarf or spirit living inside your stomach, but now we know it is an imbalance of your bodily humors - time for more leeches.

Perfect timing for this thread (is the CDC lurking on Bimmerpost?) - 80 thousand deaths in US last year from flu.

yes to the shot
The shot is immunization against likely strains for the season. Sort of like insurance. Mine was free with our health plan at work (they even came to our facility- cost me all of five minutes). At 54, my immune system is not as strong as it was, and it lessens the chance of getting my peers and subordinates sick- less time missed.
Plus more time to enjoy the new (used) X5. :-) |

Only the first part of the sentence is an opinion. It is based on the facts in the second part.
