WTF is this cord above my driver's side visor...?
...coming out from under the headliner?
Rain sensor plug? Active headlights plug? Radar Mirror plug? Didn't have a chance to see if the previous owner replaced or unstitched the rear passenger headrest to see if he installed a Radar Mirror unit. Anyone know? |

Thanks guys!
So what does that mean for me in regards to if I want to purchase a radar unit and utilize this plug? Buy a RJ45 compatible radar detector, plug it in and call it a day? |

Just confirm it's connected to power somewhere. It'll have a 2 amp power supply with an inline fuse either in your overhead light assembly or in your fuse bow behind your glove compartment. A YouTube search will show you how to access the overhead which I believe is the popular option.

I'm not 100% but to me that looks like the wire assembly that comes from a valentine 1 radar.. you can look them up and compare the wire that comes with that. I had one quite some time ago but I never wire tucked it. I simply plugged it into the cig lighter.
Wire tucking is obviously way more attractive. |

Technically that's rj-11. Rj45 is 8 pin but who's counting.
I have an Escort that uses that plug. But yeah, as Sammy said, search for the power adaptor/plug to find the manufacturer. Edit: just popped out to the garage for a look.. mine doesn't have the strain relief like yours so I would rule out escort. Not sure if it even matters.. Maybe they're all the same (pin configuration)? Pretty sweet you're already wired up!

Escort and V1 have different pinouts - pin it out with a multimeter or see if there's a brand on the adapter behind the headliner before blindly plugging a detector in.

NO! Jdamore already said it's an RJ11, so he's got himself a 56K modem tucked somewhere. You'll hear the dial-up "beeeeep...wonk....wonk....wonk" handshake when you connect to the Interwebs.

Don't go buy a radar detector just because you found a wire that can plug into one. That cord and applicable parts to connect into the fuse box are worth $10. And it takes 5 min to run the cable around the headliner to hide it.

What else would it go to? Occums razors would settle on a radar detector. Even if a certain brand doesn't fit, I'd just return it for a refund. I will most likely check under the headliner first before anything to see if there is an external fusebox that mentions a specific brand.

The cost of parts and the time required to run the right cord to any radar detector that you want is very low. So... 1) buy a radar detector because you actually want one and can get value from it and 2) buy the one you want and/or the best one you can get in your budget and 3) then spend a hour of your time and maybe $10 in parts to connect it to a power supply in the car. There are countless threads that walk you through how to do #3 for whatever you decide to buy. |
