Car addict cravings

I currently own a 335i with the procede rev3 and vrsf downpipes, but I just can't get my mind off the e9x m3. What I want is your opinions on whether or not the refinement and uniqueness of the m3 can be reached by modifying the 335i further. I have just started my freshman year of college so any purchase of a new car would be in a year or two MOST LIKELY. I am partial to NA engines which is one reason why I am thinking of trading in the 335i. Please tell me if you think any other car choices would be better (mustang 5.0 etc). Sorry for the ranting any feedback is welcome.

Here's an M3 that would look good on campus, probably get a good deal on it too.

Not really. By the time you sink as much money as would be necessary to make the 335i more M3-like, you might as well have just purchased the real thing.

And you'll never be able to get close to the engine characteristics.

No amount of money you put into the 335i will equal an M3. As many have said here, there isn't anybody trading their M3 in for a 3 series. They are that much better. Save your money and get a nicely equipped used one in a year or two. Of course one with a 6MT! Just don't start a manual vs. DCT thread. You will get banned. ;-)

All depends on how you're planning to purchase it. I'm not sure how you got the ~$25-35k you did to get the '07 335i (depending on when you bought it), but I do know that I wasn't driving a $30k car the first year of college. I'm assuming you've got some financial help from your family, so buying an M3 is probably not a bad idea for you. If you want us to further dissect your life (trust me, the old guys on here love it!), give us more details on your situation and we'll try to help/pontificate the best we can.

From a purely car-centric standpoint, there is no comparison between the two, the M3 is clearly better than the 335i. Were you expecting a different answer from us?

I say, leave your car the way it is. Still, it's nice to have a 335. Once you are done with college, and hopefully you start earning big bucks, then look into a nicely used E9x M3, or F8X M3.

To clarify the money situation, I got a very large amount of money through some legal situations I won't get into on the forum, but just know that paying for college will not be a problem and the money is in my name. The thing is I'll probably end up spending as much modifying my 335i as I would just buying an m3 now.
On a side note does supercharging the m3 ruin the cars characteristics? This would be a few years down the road if I got one but I don't think I'll stay satisfied with 414 bhp forever

I am very grateful for what I have now don't get me wrong, the thing is I know if I keep the 335i I'll definitely end up spending enough money where I could have just gotten an m3, I'm talking rb turbos and the lot. My car is really the only thing I spend money on. I definitely respect all you who have worked for your cars and you deserve an m3 way more than I do but since I have the means to I'd love to get my dream DD.

I dont know how much you walked away with from the legal settlement, but why are you blowing it on cars now? Do your research, buy real estate, make shit tons of money as an investor and then you can buy cars that won't even make you think of a BMW. If you did buy a BMW after making all that coin, M3 is the only way to go.

OP this is a tough decision. When I was in college I lusted after the E36 M3. I wasn't in the position to afford the car at the time. In fact I couldn't afford any car and used public transportation. I saved my money for books and beer.

After college, I worked a sales job and drove a VW Jetta. I still lusted after the E36, then the E46 came out. My tune changed immediately. I now wanted the E46. I still couldn't afford it so I went S2000. At the same time I changed careers. My new job opened many financial opportunities for me. Like a moron I went on a car binge. After the S2000 I moved into a CLK 55 AMG (total garbage), B6 S4, B7 RS4, and then E92 M3. In hindsight I wish I had kept one car for 10 years. Although I could afford to make these car decisions it wasn't wise. I wish I purchased more real estate when the economy moved south. I could have purchased rental units on the cheap.

20 years after college I am finally in an M3. My dream has come true. Problem is I now want a GT3. I am trying to convince myself to keep the M3 but the moron in me says "You only live once". I fight this battle with the moron in me everyday. Live in the now but think and work for the future.

You seem to know what you are in for, which is good here. While I wouldn't recommend that someone your age have a 400 HP car, it's not my job to question your driving skill/maturity.

I had two n54 335's...both heavily modded with Procede, dps, dci, meth, LSD, coils, wheels/tires. Didn't go with a turbo upgrade as I also track and wanted to upgrade the platform before going 600 HP. The 335 is just not the right car at these HP levels as there is so much you need to upgrade the make the car cohesive. And trust me, I've spoken with most of the Vishnu/FFTEC single turbo owners as well as a few of the RB Turbo owners(at Shift Sector airstrip events). Many are my friends and it's astonishing at just how many things break/go wrong.

So instead of continuing the 335 route, I went with a 2013 e92 M3 and put an ESS VT2 (intercooled) 625 blower on it. I put the blower on before the break-in period was over since 414 HP wasn't nearly enough power for me. Given the way power is produced (flat torque curve with 360 RWTQ all the way to 8,600 RPM), it makes the power in the top end of the rev range (560-580 RWHP). You won't spin the tires off idle to 3,000 RPM like in your 335 - instead they will start spinning beginning at 7,500 RPM. Very surreal. And on the track...no comparison whatsoever...even comparing a stock suspended M3 against a coil-over 335. Oh, and the best thing is no one hiccup. Not one CEL. Not one OBD code. It's just like a stock car except with 650 HP.

The M3 and blower are expensive, so it's not like you will be saving $$ in the long run with this choice, but you have to ask yourself...do you want to be worrying about fixing stuff all the time or do you want something that's bullet-proof and scary fast...and looks much better than the 335?

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for the input guys, I think I'm going to keep the 335i pretty much the way it is so I don't kill any more resale value and start trying to find a good deal on another car, most likely an m3. As a lot of you have said the gt3 is a very sexy car and it's almost tempting enough to not spend any money on cars until I'm done with college and pick up a used one of those, but I am part of the instant gratification generation as I hear a lot of people say so I don't think that will happen.

It sounds like you really want the M3. If you have the money, go for it. Be an M3 Ambassador on the road.

I guess it's just the demographic around these forums but it seems like every "student" just has tons of cash nowadays. Everyone in my high school drove like 10 yr old corollas, civics, camrys. And when they graduated to college they drove 5 yr old corollas, civics, and camrys.
