Interesting that DTM FIBERWERKS ended being the ones to produce these doors... The owner Ary has been around the e30 community for as long as me (forever). I still have his CF hood and trunk on my e30 since 2004. There is alotta bad press about his companies products, but my opinion was always that these are race parts, which one would assume requires some fabrication to install and function. The problem comes when buyers assume the parts will be plug and play, even though every part on his website clearly states (professional installation required). Im glad Ary is still around and willing to take on new projects, the doors look awesome.

I just wish I could have gotten them a couple months sooner so I could have visited Buttonwillow before sending the car East. WSIR is fine, but Buttonwillow is my main measuring stick. As the doors were getting completed, my original plan was to test the car out at Buttonwillow on Jan 25-26. But, ultimately it made more sense for me to be in LA Jan 18-19, and Buttonwillow was not available that weekend. So----Buttonwillow will just have to wait.

I realize I didn't respond to your post the other day. I understand what you say about good weather and not over-driving, but half a second in 2 turns is due to the lighter car. I've been to Willow Springs plenty in cool weather and have never been able to get to 150mph. I did it easily several times on Sunday. My previous top speed of 149.6mph in 2019 was done at 54.9ºF. The 151.4mph on Sunday was done at 54.5ºF. So, basically the same temps. Another interesting thing I noted once I returned home was that, right from the first session, I was in the 1:27s. At Willow Springs, I usually do not start out that fast. It takes me a little while to warm back up to the track. But on Sunday, I was ready to roll. I'm wondering if it's because the track is in Project Cars 2. I've spent some time driving WSIR in the game. I've been trying to see if I can extract some kind of comparative time relationship between my on-track times at Big Willow, versus the times I get in the game, and if I can somehow predict what my on-track times could be at COTA from the game. I'll be curious to see if my crude experiment has any basis in reality. Anyway, I'm thinking that my head was already good to go due to the video game. If that's the case, I'm really hoping that the video game can accelerate my learning of COTA. I've been studying that track quite intensely----driving the game a lot, talking to racers who race there, watching videos of other people driving it, and other stuff. And no doubt at WSIR, Turn 8 & 9 are an intense experience. It's the spot where I've had my most intense off-track experience. For me, it's more a test of nerves than it is a test of mad skills. Everything about that turn erodes confidence, and it starts with the cracked, wavy pavement. And that decreasing radius of Turn 9 bites even seasoned drivers when they're trying to go fast. On Saturday, one of my friends flew off Turn 9 tail first. And he's done a zillion laps there. Anyway, WSIR was my first experience of being on a track after driving it in a game, and I gotta say, I think it helped!

Let’s file this one under: I’m dumb. And stubborn!
Made a last minute purchase today that honestly has me flabbergasted. I thought that [relatively] inexpensive significant weight loss was over for me on this car. However, it turns out I was wrong! I was always under the impression that putting blanks in place of the headlights only saved 15 lbs........WRONG!!! Turns out it’s around 40lbs!! I was on the Bimmerworld website and it said a 40lbs loss. I was like, wuuut....no way. So, I called them. The guy was very nice. He said he wasn’t too busy and had time to weigh the pieces. He said they had a stock headlight assembly. He calls me back saying the headlight assembly is 15.5lbs. The three electronic modules associated with the headlights combine to about 4lbs. So that’s around 20lbs per side. The carbon blanks are 0.6 lbs each. Yup, that’s around 40lbs straight off the nose of the car! So......yeah.......I bought them. They’ll be installed on Friday right before the Chin event. The guy transporting the cars is a full race tech so he can easily do it. This will make the car somewhere between 3070-3080lbs (no fuel no driver). Can’t wait to feel that!! So many people have been telling me to do this mod. Turns out, you were right!! Sorry I’m stubborn. |

Finding that 40lbs can come out of the nose of the car and take it under 3100lbs meant that the love affair with the headlights is OVER! I'll try to find some headlight decals! mwuahahaha (Actually, this may start the process of trying to relocate the supercharger air filter up to the headlight blank. The hope is that it eliminates all risk of rubbing the intake tube. But that project may have to wait until the car returns to the West Coast.)

thats a pretty hefty amount of weight.
i wonder how much weight loss would need to take place to replace the supercharger... i think you've said its about 100lbs? there has to be an eclipse somewhere where you can trade better braking and speed through corners for power during acceleration. not that there is anything wrong with running a supercharger.

Your question of power versus weight is a classic battle. And different tracks reward different things. Chuckwalla, being a momentum track, rewards lightness. But I have COTA on the brain right now, and COTA rewards power. Lightness is not enough there. In general, being light is great. And if you can add power to a light car, then you're in the golden zone. That's what all the E36 guys are doing (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!!!!!)---taking a sub-2500lbs car and then swapping in a bigger engine. Voila! Magic combo. Put some aero and sticky tires and that's a faster car than mine.
