Whats going on M Family,

I just bought a 2013 e92 M3. Im having issues with the shift lights not turning on my car. Does anyone else have this issue ? I did get the car from a dealership after handing in my 340 lease. The M3 only has 12k miles. Would like any type of recommendations into modding my car thank you.[IMG][/IMG]

It is a setting you can turn on or off. I have iDrive and it is the car settings but I'd have to go look to see as I set it years ago and have not changed it since! If you don't have iDrive the shift lights can still be turned on or off using the steering wheel stalk on the left side od the steering column but I am not familiar with that. Did the car come with the manual? If not you can find a PDF version on the BMWUSA website.

Edit: Just took a closer look at your pictures (beautiful car!) but I see the middle hump indicating the car has iDrive.

The instructions are on pages 29 and 30 in the M3 Supplemental Manual.

@kscarrol I tried both instances but the lights still don't turn on is it possibly because of the setting I have it adjusted to ? Or do they light up at a certain speed and rpm?

Another thing is that the shift lights probably go on much later than you think they should if you're not accustomed to such a high revving engine.

Mate keep in mind :
Shift lights work only in M-mode or with the MDM button activated on the steering wheel.
Just floor it till you go past 7K rpm's !

Yes, you won't see them activate until you approach the redline.

It’s a setting in iDrive and/or via the steering wheel stalk. It’s also KEY dependent.
Shift lights do not require M Mode or MDM to be turned on, they can be set independently.

Nope. I went through this when I rotated keys and couldn’t figure out why my lights stopped working. Now my settings are shift lights always on, regardless of other modes, with either key. I’ve never inserted a key into the socket (CA).

There are a few threads which detail it better than I can off hand, Google search “m3post shift lights” or something of the like.

I have them set to come on when I hit the M button but they only light up at high rpm. Apparently they also work outside of M mode if you set it with the buttons on the stock. Only works on DCT cars though.

Usually on by default in M mode and they come on very fast try to turn it on in the idrive for the M drive settings and give it a go in third gear.

Stunning car. Love the color and that rolling shot is great. Don't be afraid of the redline! These motors love to be ringed out. Exhaust of your choosing and intake (I recommend aFe carbon fiber stage II) are a good place to start. The GTS DCT tune is another excellent addition. I'm a fan of minor cosmetic mods as well - color matched reflectors, black kidney grills, OEM carbon trunk spoiler, etc. Enjoy it! Such a low mileage example as well, excellent pick up.

This will give you a better idea of when those shift lights are supposed to come on. You can see it changes depending on what gear you're in:

Can the shift lights be retrofitted to a manual car?
