Exhaust questions

Hey guys, sorry for the ignorance but I'm trying to understand the differences when it comes to exhaust mods. I know I can upgrade the exhaust but what I'm having a hard time understanding is primary cat delete, secondary cat delete, x pipes, mode pipes, x pipes..... what's all this l, what are the benefits, which would be the best option if I want a bit more noise after upgrading an exhaust. Is there any other exhaust mod I'm missing in that list.

Trying to learn and understand how it works and if I would get a light on any of the mods.

Thanks you in advance.

primary cat delete you delete the first set of cat which hold the 4 o2 sensor if your state has emission inspections then you have a issue because you have the check engine on can get the light to go out with a tune now you have secondary and resonator if you get a xpipe you get rid off all that just mentioned and the car will be loud as hell some exhaust come with the xpipe or you can get only the axle back I have the exhaust mod with a xpipe and primary cat hope this help

Hey I’m kind of in the same boat...

I recently bought a E92 M3 that’s bone stock. I want to swap out the entire exhaust set up, and keep it whole in case I want to revert the car back to stock.

That said, I’m looking at X-Pipe & back combos. I don’t want to remove the cats completely, thinking high flow cats will suffice.

The main question is, with or without resonators....?

Can I expect any significant difference by going with the resonators as well?

This is the OEM full exhaust setup. Starting from top to bottom:
Rear exhaust muffler box
Set of 2 Resonators
Set of 2 secondary cats
Set of 2 primary cats

In the 2nd picture is the X-pipe....there's different variations of setups depending on the type of sound you want. Race is the loudest version because most of it is straight piped.

Test pipes delete the primary cats

You can delete the secondary cats by either straight piping or with resonators which reduce some of the drone

If you want to save a lot of money you can also modify the pipes inside of the rear exhaust muffler box...search "OEM exhaust mod"...it only costs a couple hundred dollars. If you want loud but not droney look into the 2.5 pipe version of the mod.
