Close Call Yesterday

Almost put my baby in to the wall at Pitt Intl.

Footage from my friend's Exige S behind me. This was toward the end of the day, and my GoPro was out of juice, so unfortunately there is no on board footage.

Cut the right a tad short and clipped the grass on the right side of the track at ~125. Couldn't get traction down before I clipped the grass on the left side. After that I was in 'just don't hit the wall' mode. As soon as I determined that brakes weren't going to keep me out of the wall, I slammed it in 2nd and powered out of the slide.

Not my first spin, and certainly not my last, but it's a sobering reminder that tracking is a big boy hobby with big boy consequences. I have ~80 hours of track time at Pitt Intl. and still make mistakes.

Track safely!

Nice save, many a lesser driver would've gone two feet in and rode the slide into the wall.

Yeah, the north track is a fun little circuit. The south section was just opened earlier this year making it a 3.2mi course, but yesterday's TnT was just the north track.

PFC 08s didn't warm up until about halfway through, hence the squealing. Yes, I could def use those GT-R Brembos.

Cheers.

I lived in Pittsburgh for 30 years and it figures they finally open the south track after I'm gone...
I miss that track. Lots of memories there.

Good job on keeping her intact!

Good save! You were headed straight for the barrier there. Nothing scarier than losing it at speed. I had something similar happen to me. Had the car fully sideways through a 90mph sweeper. Super tight butthole.

The little kink of #9 is really challenging to negotiate at full speed. Good save!

Nice recovery there Kawstik.......a lesser driver would have just slammed on the brakes all the way into the armco. Curious...what gear were you originally in before the start of the spin.....4th or 5th?

Also curious. I'm no pro, but for corners like that I typically short-shift before entry.

Thanks.

I was in 4th, foot down. My right side caught just enough of the grass to break traction. I used to short-shift turn 9, as dparm mentioned, but I know this track, and I know my car, and as long as I nail the turn-in angle, I can go foot down in 4th, hitting the apex at about 125.

Just went in a little too sharp. Lesson learned.
