OEM mod vs m-performance exhaust

Had 2 versions of the OEM exhaust and just installed the m-performance exhaust. There are actually some subtle differences in the oem exhaust mod that I wanted to share.

M-performance exhaust is very quiet. Almost same volume as stock but different tone that changes based on RPM and load. Love it but wish it was louder. Sound from 3500-4000 under load is magic.

OEM exhaust mod perforated pipes replaced with solid pipes. This exhaust had more volume but with a bassy tone at low RPM and under load.

OEM exhaust mod perforated pipes covered (not replaced) removing cat hair. Sounded very similar to m-performance exhaust without bassy tones, but less musical. No magic from 3500-4000 rpms. However, it's louder than m-performance across all RPMs.

I like the tone and look of the m-performance exhaust the best. If I was going for a m-performance sound on the cheap I would recommend the OEM exhaust mod by covering the perforated pipes, not replacing them. It's similar! After living with both versions of OEM exhaust mod for a few years I could tell the difference.

All sound great, but different. Maybe it helps someone who hasn't heard all of them.

OEM mod actually sounds better in my ears, while doesn't look as nice. Flame suit on...

MPE > OEM mod, in person.
MPE doesn’t video well imo. But the OEM mods do sound nice too and are a serious value.

MPE sound hard to capture on video and less so while free revving.

I don't know if anyone else has heard the difference between replacing the pipes and covering them but it's there!

I can see people preferring the OEM exhaust mod especially because it's the right volume (for me). Quiet when you want and loud when you want. No drone. It's really fantastic.

Can't shoot flames when you spittin facts

One of my favorite things about these cars is each exhaust setup is so remarkably different. Compared to the F8x where the farts and bangs are simply varying volumes among the different aftermarket exhaust options.

Totally agree with all said here.

MPE is my fav from aesthetic standpoint. The perfect OEM+ type approach.

I currently have the OEM 2 pipe mod and really like it. Planning to up it to the 4 pipe version soon.

I've been to exhaust meets and I've driven catless versions and they all sound so great in different ways.

I just don't like the hassle of messing with emissions and without spending thousands, the OEM mod is my sweet spot. I have a duplicate rear section so I can always revert to stock.

I have been keeping my eyes open for a used, well-priced MPE, though....

new flavor note. When MPE is heated up I swear it sounds like the sound BMW pipes into their new cars. Maybe they modeled after the MPE...

Despite your username, I’m not sure if you’re serious, lol. I think the S65 with an inconel MPE sounds nothing like anything else BMW made/makes. If the newer things sounded that good (even if just interior and artificial), I’m sure many more on these boards would be tempted to trade up.

I could be wrong. Clarification, this is when the windows are rolled up- the sound from the interior reminded me of synthetic exhaust note, but real 😀 Outside it's a totally different ball game of course.
