how much $ did you spend on car parts?

I see some crazy modified cars, it just seems a bit crazy!!! I started to price out couple of things, and OMG, I can just sell it and buy something in a different class for that much (z06/ used gallardo etc).

I currently have ESS 575, fabspeed exhaust (HFC, xpipe), black grills, blackline lights. I want BBK ($3k!), side gills ($150), front lip (anywhere from $700-2000), that fancy trunk ($2k?), some wide rear tires ($800-900), some cool pedals ($300), CB exhuast ($1300), angel eyes ($300), Dinan suspension ($1800) so that totals it up to almost another $9k. You take a car that was like $45k used, plus the mods I have now ($16k), plus another 9 for what i want and it comes to $24k, so that could have put me at like $70k!!!! Didn't R35 cost that much new, when they came out?? A used Gallardo is about that much! Prob one of the early 997 TT's are about that much....
And the bottom line is that even with all these mods, I still wouldn't be able to get 10c on the $. And with the F30 m3 coming out the price on our cars will drop another 10%... with all the miles i rack on mine, god, i'd be lucky to get $40k for when all is said and done....

this sucks...

Modding is a hobby. Some hobbies are more expensive then others.

Nice thing is...you don't "have" to do it all at once.
I had a few months to wait on mine being built...so I bought a little here...a little there...in that time. Added a few things as time as gone by.
Like GOLFFRR said...it's more of a hobby.

this isnt helping. i consider most of my mods wear items though so i keep buying tires, wheels, studs, brake pads, rotors, oil changes, brake flushes. without all that expense im actually pretty low on the mod scale. at least thats how i justify it to myself and my wife.

Exactly and I consider fuel as entertainment. Which is why you will never hear me complain about gas mileage.

I guess some folks like to mod even if their mods + car are worth more than an equally or more capable factory car.

I for one wouldnt do it..I have moded cars like that before. you lose you ass and are lucky if you can get 50 cents on the dollar for your parts

I understand what your saying but if you are worried about resale when modding your car, your probably better off not in the first place. I for one mod because i enjoy workin on my car. Modding like others have said is a hobby. An expensive one but nonetheless a hobby (addiction).

I buy most of my mods used. So many people sell barely used parts because they want to try something different or upgrade to a new car. I also sell my cars stock and part-out the mods separately. It's still expensive but the cost is minimized with this approach. I have been lucky enough to sell some parts for the same price I paid for them.

Roughly $3000. Carbon fiber interior trim, performance steering wheel, black kidney grills, black zcp wheels. My M3 is Fire Orange so I figured I'd splurge a bit since I saved money on painted reflectors.

That is funny.

Now please take those "sales award" decals off of your beautiful car...

Agreed. It's injecting your personality into the car as you individualize it. It's a showcase for your tastes and priorities. It's like interior decorating. Oops. You know, like in a manly way.

Bought a used 08. Thought I'd leave it stock because so much better than my 335i. Then I found this forum and then a tuning shop and then M meets all over California. $12k into it and just scratching the surface. The best part are the cool ass people I've met on meets and still keep in touch with. Oh I want a BBK but wanting a Ducati 848evo more is delaying me.

Well said. When I picked the M3, I was picking a base platform on which to build upon. I would much rather have my modified, personalized, soon to be beast M3 than a stock $130k car (especially since I would undoubtedly want to mod that).

I have spent maybe $9,000 on top of the purchase of the car. I have pretty much phased out of modding cars as I get older. I am only in my 30s but I reached as high as you can go with the mod bug in 2004-2005 when I was in numerous car magazines, tv preview, judge, and winning at car shows. Now I have other hobbies such as exotic weaponry, fiber night optics, etc.. Stuff that costs way above toys for this M3. Modding this car or any car kinda bores me now. Owning a home and several nice vehicles also helps.
