Redline 10w60 or LiqiMoly?

Looking to change my oil soon. I have 9qts of Redline but wondering if LiquiMoly would be better.

thoughts?

Some claim liquimoly makes the M a bit noisier. Can't say anything about redline on this platform but on my infiniti, the ester rich oil was very beneficial. Also has tons of moly. They do have a very good reputation though.

Red Line's 10w60 is thick for its grade. Since you already have it, I'd suggest thinning it out slightly with some of their 5w40 and using it up.

I suspect you won't notice any difference between RL and LM. Both are good oils (Red Line is arguably "better", depending on how you define that) and will work just fine for 99% of M3 drivers.

Liquidmoly made mine a little noisier. Went back to Castro just because it was marginally more expensive. Lots of people use liquidmoly with no issues

I don't have access to SAE papers anymore, but there was one from a while ago that had some testing around how the specific acoustic properties of an oil (or lack thereof) didn't correlate to engine wear.

In other words, oil making an engine noisier, everything else being equal, really doesn't mean anything. If you like the peace of mind from a quieter motor, then run the "quiet oil".

+1

Redline 10w60 is super thick. I ran it once and I would not use it again.

I ran a mix of 0w40 and 10w60 before. Now I'm using BMW's Shell 10w60 after getting my rod bearings done.

I'm still on the original RB's at 73k. Previous owner had been using redline and had a blackstone analysis done at 71 and got a clean bill of health. I get the point though, if it's too thick, it won't get in the nooks and crannies.

I'd stick with Redline.
You can also mix the grades
Note what he says at 6:47 about oil temp and lighter grades

No and no, just run the OEM 10W60 which is made by Shell, it is on sale at ECS. Or Castrol TWS, those other 2 run thicker which isn't good.

I run Redline 0w40 at the moment (ran redline 10w60&0w40 mix before at 6:3). Thick enough for film strength while providing faster heat up. Data logging with Carly shows steady 80-90C even under spirited driving. Wish I had oil pressure gauge to be 100% sure I'm doing alright, but I find 0w40 to be quite good around the town.

Do you run that 0w40 in summer also?

I might run it, seeing how main bearings of these cars are almost always worn when they are out due to tight clearance. It will also depend on oil consumption and UOA.

I just switched to AMSOIL 5w30 euro blend, also getting slightly more noise at idle.

A bit too thin, IMO. Do you have an oil pressure gauge?

for summer I'd consider Redline 5w-50, if you want something "lighter" but I personally don't think a 0w-40 or 5w-40 is enough for summer (even Redline)

What Castrol product are you using? The OG was Castrol and I called Castrol and could not get a definitive answer as far as what is the same as the OG stuff. I prefer it to the new twin turbo shell blend the dealers offer now.

so for the summer, you guys are saying redline 10w60 is too thick? I don't mind long warm up. It definitely did take a while to warm up in the winter; I'd say a good 8-10 mins of normal driving to hit full redline/near 210 (imprecise, I know). I rarely drove the car in the winter though and it usually sits in the garage most of the week.

Last thing I want though, is a noisy valvetrain.

Red Line's 10w60 is quite thick for its grade, yes. HTHSV is 5.8 whereas most other 10w60s are more like 5.4-5.5.

It's not a matter of long warm-up, really.

Castrol 12064 EDGE SUPERCAR 10W-60, replaces the former TWS fluid.

Price went up by nearly 20% here. Premium for "Approved for Koenigsegg"?

Thanks for all the input guys, thinking of picking up 3 qts of their 5w40 to thin it out, as suggested. 6:3 10w60:5w40 seem ok? It gets hot here in NC and under spirited driving I'd like to have that piece of mind.
