I cant believe I missed out on this while he was here. I had the wrong part sent to me. Correct part arrives today. Hopefully he will be able to do this remote.

Are there different DSC software versions between earlier cars and later cars?
In other words, are different gen M3's fitted with different DSC software that may be more/less intrusive? Could this explain why some people feel Euro MDM didn't do enough, while some others say that it allows for very high slip angles? - KJ |

That's a very mysterious statement, what do you mean? Or will all be revealed during next season's opener?

Your heart still skips a beat as the back slides around and then you take a deep breath as the car saves you time and time again. I think it's amazing. I might be scarred if it was less intrusive. If you want to drift, dsc off all the way. If you want serious speed with control, Euro MDM is the way to go.

Mike has made a couple of postings that Euro MDM will let you drift, but later when armyav8tor actually tracked EuroMDM and reported his disappointment, Mike then posted that it won't actually let you drift. If you've tracked E9x extensively, you become very familiar with just how intrusive MDM is at tight, slow corners and to what extent. So, I'm inclined to put my stock on armyav8tor's findings. And, I assume that Mike perhaps hasn't tested the EuroMDM on the track, yet. You really can't test these things on the street. The collective knowledge this type of forum and the boldness of its members to go where no one has gone before (i.e. this retrofit) is a testament to the value of forums and is (aside the frequent entertainment value) the reason why we spend so much time on it. So, kudos to Mike and OP for figuring this out and making it work. Judging from all the excitement, many members without iDrive will finally get MDM. But, EuroMDM (on top of finally getting MDM) is just an icing on the cake, and I don't think it's the main reason for most of the members for the excitement. As for the minority who were hoping to use it on the track, I'm pretty sure they're in for a disappointment. I too had considered getting it, but recently decided to go DSC off, so it's a moot point for me.

It allows more of a 'drift angle'. This is by no means a statement which says it will actually allow you to drift. The first time I used mdm on my m3 I was very disappointed with it. If the car came with euro mode enabled from the factory I don't think I would have had that view from the beginning.

When I said 'drift' i did not mean a full on drift with tires smoking etc... But it certainly let me get pretty sideways in my car. I guess it comes down to how you define the word. I appreciate the pm, thank you. Mike

A1 post. Thanks so much, and thanks for including a picture of the SZL. It's about $500 bucks, right?
I never warmed up to the double hump look (I have it now on my 335i and thought I would). I want my M3 to be exactly the way I want it, since I intend to keep this one for a looooong time. By the way, a couple of weeks ago, my dealer had a fully loaded M3 including individual color but no double hump and MDrive. The owner purposedly left it out. There are not many of us who purposedly leave out the iDrive/MDrive (they're still tied together in Canada), but there are some. Thank-you.

I didn't have much doubt that a non-iDrive would soon follow, but glad to see Mike (and members) helped make it happen so quickly! Considering that the price people pay for other mods (performance and otherwise), this one is a no brainer.
And I assume it comes in well under the factory option cost

Still haven't answered (most) of the PM's and emails. Sorry about that guys.. I promise to get to them over the next week. I should have some downtime on Friday.
I will be working on how to calibrate the steering angle sensor remotely. Once that's figured out, I'll be able to do the retrofit remotely. In the case where this is not possible, you can take your car to an independent shop or dealer and have the sensor re-calibrated for $100 bucks and then MDM and servotronic will immediately start working Stay 'tuned'

Hans, got your SZL here and it's going out today. you should receive it on Thursday or Friday. I included the coding cable and DVD as well. Sending tracking information to your email.
Looking forward to working with you early September when I am back in the US, and doing the first remotely programmed M-Drive/MDM retrofit! Update for others: Figured out how to re-calibrate the steering angle sensor remotely, so it appears that a full retrofit from afar is possible!

Mike - thats for the coding tonight.... I just got back from a test drive and it's absolutely amazing! It just started raining so it was perfect conditions. Mdm is actually useful now! no more early and heavy throttle cuts! if I countersteer in time it doesn't cut my throttle and apply rear brakes. This is what mdm should have been - I have no idea why bmw didn't do this - probably because they were trying to limit liability in the usa - we're just a nasty litigious society.
I can't wait to try it on the track. Basically before this I can't even drive it with mdm on the track because it was so invasive. This is going to be fun... I'll report again after I return from a track day thanks again Mike! And welcome back to the forum! -D |
