What lightweight batteries are you guys and gals using these days? I'm on the border of tt2/3 so I don't think I need anything extremely light, just something reliable. Pretty sure my battery is on its way out.

Antigravity battery was my choice when mine was going out last year. Similar specs to the OEM battery but only 16lbs or so. If you look around online there's usually a discount code. I think I used a PCA one when I got mine lol

Did my 2nd autocross day up at Lime Rock Park this past weekend, this sport is quite addicting. For those unfamiliar, the Lime Rock autocross is set up in a lapping format (5 or so minute 'sessions' on a very short track, nothing over 2nd gear). The course consists primarily of right hand turns with a small chicane on the straights to keep speeds low.

The feeling of the car was very different, not sure which of the variables (different ambient temps, different tires, different traction setting) was the primary cause or if they all just aggregated to a feeling of less grip on day 2 (e.g. when braking it seemed to slide first with anything more than moderate pressure and when changing directions it didn't feel as solid on turn in as the first day).

Based on the tire temperature (really the only objective data I have) I would say it probably came down to overdriving, or driving beyond my ability. Not unsurprisingly, the overdriving didn't actually equate to any faster times in the one portion where they monitor track times.

Day 1:
Temperature: 60* @ 9am, 72* @ noon
Tires: Michelin Pilot Super Sport, 255/35/19 front 275/35/19 rear
Cold tire pressure: 33f 35r (both left and right)
Hot tire pressure: 38f 40r (both left and right)
MDM traction setting

Day 2:
Temperature: 41* @ 9am, 55* @ noon
Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, 265/35/18 front, 295/30/18 rear
Cold tire pressure: 36f 36 r (both left and right)
Hot tire pressure: 46front left 42 front right 42 rear left 41 rear right
DSC Off

Both hot tire pressures were after the 4th session, not a before/after of a single session.

Overall it was still a ton of fun and I felt much more comfortable despite the lower grip level. Outright speed wasn't really the objective so I didn't play with pressures too much, but I did drop them back down to 40 all around where they seemed to stabilize for the most part thereafter.

Those hot tire temps are way too high, you're going to nuke the tires. You need to be shooting for 35ish HOT, meaning start way colder.

What's the deal with running with PCA? Is it up to PCA to allow drivers to join the sessions, i.e. you have a competent enough car to join them, will keep the pace, and will be respectful of their (higher value) cars?

I'll always pay more for a lower car count event so this makes sense to me.

They are actually the only brand specific org I've run with, so I can't compare to BMW, Audi, etc., but I'm guessing they're all similar. They just seem quicker overall due to generally superior machinery, and they run events at a couple tracks my go-to org doesn't. I like that it's usually the same crew, so there is some trust and comfort playing a bit closer than with some people you have no idea about. And like you said, their cars are worth multiple times what mine is haha.

What was the process of getting in with them though?

I've driven MT 991.2 and PDK 991.1 GT3s and I found them very nicely behaved but I couldn't give a comment on their true handling characteristics which, IMO, begin at 70mph+ track conditions. The 4.0 is loads better than the already decent 3.8 with a ton of midrange, the manual + clutch practically drive themselves. Throttle response + gearing is kind of a let down compared to our cars. 80mph in second and 115 in third limits the fun a bit. Braking and pedal feel are incredible.

I just e-mailed the CDI with my experience, and had to jump through the B group hoop a couple times since they can't do check rides with the pandemic. Kinda sucked at first, but was worth it. After the first two he agreed to do a lead follow check off.

Hard to beat our throttle response with a non-electric powertrain haha. I swear all of the 991 GT3 drivers had an E92 M3 before so they get pretty interested and like to see it.

Swapped out this old broken alternator. Trying to get my car ready for tracking again. It's been a long break.

hi alex! i've been on a little bit of a break as well, but hoping to get back to more frequent tracking next year. how many miles were on that alternator? any symptoms, or did it just seize?

168,500 miles. It just stopped working. On the way back from an errand, just got the nice chime of doom and the red battery icon and an error message. I was also getting weird DCT transmission errors could not go into neutral etc when coming to a stop.

I could drive the car maybe 10-15 miles if I trickle charged it to full before going out on a run but it was nerve wracking just watching the voltage go from 12V to 10.8V etc. I haven't driven the car at all in months and then COVID hit and took out my track plans for the year/maintenance.

Followed the DIY on the forum. Getting the radiator fan out was backbreaking, and trying to get the alternator which was stuck to the engine block was also backbreaking. I tried all the methods of tapping in a bolt to unwind the bushing w/PB blaster but it's hard to get to and it didn't seem to be moving.

I was able to get it to pivot around the bottom bolt axis and then when it was leaning to the right side I was able to hammer it out of the bracket which holds it close if the nut on the end isn't flush.

Navigating the maze of radiator hoses and oil lines and hoping I didn't fracture any was tough. Just had to go really slowly.

I signed up for Buttonwillow during Black Friday so that'll be my first track event in over a year.

Is anyone going to the Optima Ultimate Street Car event at COTA next month? Was thinking of a day trip to spectate.
