oil level not changing

I recently did an oil change. Put in 8.5L Castrol 10w 60, indicator showed correct amount at halfway mark. I like to run it at the 3/4 mark, I added the other half liter, no change.
drove for a couple weeks, still no change so I put in another quarter liter on Friday and took it on two 1 hour trips for the weekend and still hasn't moved. is it possible this is because I drained the oil filter reservoir as well? why hasn't it moved?

It is definitely a quirky system. The only other thing i can think of besides having to keep adding oil (which could be a problem) is that the wings of the oil filter collapsed. Thus it is soaking up too much oil. I have heard about this and maybe swapping the filter is the way to go... it is the cheapest way.

Hate Electronic dipstick.

Why would the conformation of the oil filter have any effect whatsoever on how much oil it would "soak up"? However much oil it takes to wet the filter matrix is the most that it can ever "soak up"

Just keep giving it time, the extra oil will probably register at some point. Changed my oil yesterday and initially it was between min and the middle point. Added 0.5L and it took a couple trips and an hour of driving for it to register. No need for you to worry as you're at the correct level now anyways.

Did you try a force reset? Select the oil level in the center screen and then after you get a reading and the car is warm hold the button on the end of the stalk in until the little clock starts spinning.

I had weird oil level readings when I first got my '12 E93 M3.. it would tell me I had too much oil one day, then was fine the next, etc.. after updating to the latest i-step, I haven't had any oil level reading issues since. There was definitely something a bit off with earlier versions and the oil readings.

Just be patient with it. I like waiting at least 1 week after a top up before I add more, it takes a while for the oil to mix in for some reason. However, I always keep it above the middle line.

I got to play the +1L game again today...

Car said it needed a liter - which I am highly suspicious of cause I only have 2,000KM on this oil change. Added 0.25L - forced a re-read and still said it needed a liter. Added another 0.25L and forced a re-read - blammo - she is sitting on the full-to-the-tits line...

I guess I will need to purchase a new oil sensor... FML cause those are EXPENSIVE... The engineer, or accountant, that got rid of the dip stick deserves a special place in hell.

Cheers,

Im having the same issue. 9.3 quarts in with the last oil change and is still reading 1/2 quart low. Ive done the force reset a couple of times now, no change. Guess its time for a new sensor

You have to do the measurement at idle on level ground. I put the 8L in and then drive it around the block. Shut it off. Start it and then take another measurement.

If it says add 1QT...I add a half L in.

Remember L > Qt for those that use the BMW oil.
