NT01 or R888r?
Trying to decide what to go with I ran R888r before but I don't know how it compares to NT01. Looking for opinions of people who have tried both.

Not sure what your intended use is, but everyone I talk to who buys the R888R swears they'll never buy it again. Way too much tread squirm and very difficult to manage at the limit.
The NT01 is one of the perennial favorites for track tires. I wouldn't really run either of those on the street unless you have money to spare and are positive you would never be driving in the rain. You could also look at the RE-71R which is slightly less aggressive and more streetable -- it's also a favorite for HPDE and autocross guys.

In my experience, the Nitto NT01 is superior as an HPDE tire over the R888R. I think most would agree that after all these years, the NT01 is still the go-to r-compound for weekend track warriors.
They provide a bit more grip over popular Extreme Summer tires like the Hankook RS-4 and Dunlop Direzza ZIII, and they don't wear quite as fast as the Bridgestone RE-71R or other more aggressive compounds. NT01's do not really heat cycle out, and they tend to get faster as they wear. Use em until you chord them. Are there faster r-compounds and semi-slicks available today? Absolutely, but they are going to wear at a much quicker rate. - Ryan

RA1 is an old but good tire that can handle rain, but costs more than the NT01. I run RA1 on my turbo E36 M3 in the street for 3 season use but it’s not ideal during the colder parts of spring and fall.

The R888 are junk.(plus one on that) The NT01 will out perform it all day long. The Ra1 isn't all that bad of a tire when shaved. The price point , and performance will still send you in the NT01's direction. Hope this helps.

NT01s are hard to beat, especially for a lapping/HPDE tire. Full depth they work well in the wet, and in the dry they perform consistently from new till dead. You can run them until they cord and get faster as they wear down. They can take 50-60 heat cycles with proper alignment, and flipping them if necessary. They aren’t the fastest, but in terms of speed/durability ratio and given their price they are hard to beat.
R888Rs are alright, similar to the Nittos just slightly worse in almost every way, lol. Factor in them being more since they are a 'Toyo', it makes almost no sense to purchase them over the Nittos. Last edited by tsk94; 08-27-2019 at 05:16 PM.. |

I have R888R right now. Super loud but stick very well when warm.
I plan to switch back to CUP2 when these are burnt up.
