I used a shop vac and sucked my coolant out from the block entry and exit ports and also the radiator. Got about 2.5 gallons out. The expansion tank was bone dry, I feel like this was a good way to drain all the coolant. Getting it back in will be interesting though.

reporting back after installing.

I want to point out I never had a check engine light, only a few codes for thermostat on the Carly app and also the following.

-Auto stop start would never work
-Oil temp would never stay around 210f.
-Redline gauge would never go full warm.

Also after using the shop vac to remove the coolant I was able to add 2.2-2.5 gallons back into the system. This was never getting under the car and removing the plug, all from the top. Thought I would share for others who might not get a CEL, but notice these issues.

Where exactly did you suck the coolant out from? How did you get back in ?

Did you slide the vacuum hose in those ports or literally sealed off the ports with the vacuum hose and sucked it out through creating a vacuum. Confusing question, but hope you understand what I'm asking.

I did not close off the other port as I was worried about creating a vacuum would be bad. So I just stuck it real tight on one side and the other has some serious suction.

Just replaced my thermostat and now I have a A6D1 "short circuit to positive or open circuit - additional water pump". Anybody know what that is? Apparently some BMWs have an electrical aux water pump but I don't see one for our cars on Realoem.

I found the additional water pump under heating and cooling in RealOEM. Anybody know what it does and if there is a fix besides replacing it?

I would just check the wiring before replacing it. Did you disconnect it when you were doing the thermostat repair and not properly reconnect?

Believe that's for the HVAC "Rest" function where it will attempt to keep the interior at a set temperature while you're away from the car

I double checked the connections before I buttoned everything up. I initially drove it for about 15-20 min until fully warmed up to check for coolant leaks then checked the codes. After resetting the code popped up again. However, it's since gone away after a long drive. I guess I didn't drive it long enough for the pump to kick in.

BTW, I thought my gas mileage was fine (about 21mpg on the highway) but it's improved about 2-3 mpg after replacing the thermostat.

Changed my Tstat a few days ago. A crap load of coolant spilled on top of the block, between the throttle bodies. I stuck a plastic hose in the crevice extension of the shop vac and took care of it. Just sharing in case this happens to you.

I changed my thermostat this past weekend. This thread helped a lot. I used a 2 way transfer pump as recommended in this thread for draining the coolant out of the overflow container. It worked great. Overall, the trickiest part for me was loosening/tightening the 8 clamps that hold the plenum on. Some of the screws are very hard to get to. I would have used a 6mm socket, but I did not have an extension. Thanks to everyone in this thread for their input, as I saved a lot of money by doing this on my own.

The one piece of advice that I'd give is not to loosen the throttle body clamps too much. I did on a few and had trouble tightening them up afterwards, especially the ones in the back because it's really hard to not push the head away with the screwdriver if they are too loose because there's no way to keep them from spinning around due to the tight space.

Gentlemen, any advice on how the hoses and the coolant connections on the thermostat housing can be easily disconnected. If one doesn't know the right way of doing it you will end up with a damaged and expensive repair. Thank you in advance!

The hoses are removed by sliding the clip out to the side with a screwdriver. The clip slides on a track. You can see in the picture above that there is a natural stopping point for the clip in an open position when it slides out of closed position. It is probably easiest to start by sliding the top side over to the open position with a screw driver then grasping the center point to pull the bottom side out of closed position. I suggest grabbing it solidly and pulling it all the way off so you don't accidentally knock it off while moving the hoses out of your way. When ready to reattach the hose simply put the clip back on.

The electronic connection to the sensor is removed by putting your thumb on the flat center section of the clip while grasping the connector and squeezing the wire clip inwards (do not pry it off as others have said)

Finally got the job done. Changed the thermostat and the temp sensor because I was unsure what was throwing the code although when I cleared the codes after install it had both for thermostat and the temp sensor.

Didn't empty the coolant hence ended up spilling into the engine's V when the thermostat housing was removed. Unfortunately didn't suck out ... hope it will burn away given the extreme heat within.

Didn't have to loosen the fuel rail. As said in this thread there was plenty of flex to wiggle out. Had to change the two o-ring. The originals were hard a damaged. For the cost of AUD$200 for the thermostat and the sensor and three hours (I took things easy while mopping up the coolant covered floor) job done to my satisfaction. Extremely happy with myself.

Thank you very much to everyone for putting this detailed DIY together to help people like us. Can't thank the ///3 brotherhood enough. Cheers All!

about a gallon or so from the expansion tank and then a bit more when you remove the radiator hoses from the t-stat housing. you know you're done pumping out the fluid from the expansion tank when you are just sucking air. the bleed screw is on top of the expansion tank.
After siphoning the expansion tank when I get to detaching the hose from the tsat will spillage occur?

Thanks. That worked and it was minimal.
