Recall on battery cable?

Hi guys-

I just got a call from my dealership saying there is an open recall on my battery cable? I have to call them back, but wanted to see if anyone else had this issue?

I checked recall.gov and the airbag issue is all that came up.

Interesting. Maybe they want you to bring your car in, check it out, find a few leaks and try to charge you a few grand to fix?

It's possible, but if that were the case, an immaculate M3 with 26k miles on it wouldn't make a good candidate.

If they want to replace it I'll let them I suppose, but the car is away for winter.

I had that recall for my 2008 e90 335i 2 years ago.

Im not aware if this one extends to M3s, but it was a massive recall affecting virtually all E90 and E60 cars, and more.

My E90 never had this recall done under the previous owner as I learned the hard way before Christmas and the car completely shut off on the highway with all electrical power gone. Incredibly dangerous situation to be in. Thankfully mine is manual and by clutching out at speed the motor turned over and the car started back up. Dealer stated that my fuse/junction box had melted due to the faulty cable shorting out. It's also a fire hazard as you can imagine...

Take it in and get it done if your M3 is affected by the recall, though I seriously remember the M3s not being affected by this.

I had this recall done at the last visit to the dealer - service advisor mentioned it when I picked up the car.

Why not go to the BMW recall site, plug in your VIN, and see if that recall shows up. Or your can call BMW USA to get more info as well.

I did that before positing and only the airbag is listed.

I would call BMW USA if you're concerned.

I was just at the dealer and this is indeed an open campaign for e9x M3's now, even for out of warranty vehicles.

This is the same as the battery cable recall for other 3 series a few years back.

Had this issue on my '11 e90 in early December. Ended up installing the new cable end myself. Sounds like I was a month too early.

While cruising down the road, the car started throwing all sorts of electrical system warnings on the dash, then started miss-firing like crazy. Pulled off the road and the car died. It acted like a very weak battery. Replaced the battery on the side of the road and everything was good until the next day on the return trip home. Similar failure but this time it seemed like it had a little stronger battery charge. Was waiting for a tow when I randomly tried the ignition and it fired up. Was looking around online to see if the problem was common and saw the recall for "normal" 3 series. Was surprised the M3 wasn't included since it has the same wiring. Guess it is included now.... It was a cheap part but not the easiest thing to get to.

Very interesting. Checked the site in the link above and only the airbag was shown for my '09 E92 M3.

I remember this on many non M models which was suspect to me because they share the same cable.

I've checked the VIN of both M3s that I have and neither have an open recall for this issue.

I'm afraid I won't find out till April when I take the car out of storage, but I promise to post the details as soon as I find out.
