Sunroof Left Open - Need Help
So I left my car outside for an hour today (covered, of course) as the weather was nice and I was just going for a run. About 3 miles from home a random monsoon-like flash flood came through the area and I finally made it home, finding both myself and the inside of the car soaked! Boy the weather in New England blows
While I had the car covered (cover is not waterproof), a lot of water came through the sunroof and some of it got on the front/rear seats. I immediately did a three step leather restoration (leathermasters strong cleaner, leather vital, and then protection cream) so the seats are salvaged. Unfortunately the rear floor mats were completely soaked through and the carpeting beneath them was also soaked though. I used an extractor to get as much of the water out as possible and then did a full carpet cleaning and hand dried with towels but I can tell there is still water trapped beneath the carpet (when I push down on the carpet I can hear a squishing sound). What can I do? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. This sucks.

You covered it, with the sunroof open? Not under any type of overhead cover? Is that what you're saying? Wow.
You might also want to get your hands on some Damp-rid hanger bags to leave in it anytime it's closed up for a while, especially in the heat. Don't let that stuff get poked/leaked on your carpet or interior though - it's not just straight water after getting sucked out of the air and it is nasty stuff. Bucket of charcoal may help while parked too. Don't laugh.

First, go exchange your title for a flood one. J/K.
But yeah, why the hell would you leave the sunroof open? I'd understand in the vent position, but open? Anyway, I guess you learned that lesson the hard way. By the way, just leaving your ventilation system out of recirculate lets heat escape the car. And leaving anything open not only allows water inside the car, but dust as well. Much better to buy a windshield sunscreen and tint your windows than leaving anything open, even in triple-digit heat. Finally, now the ironic thing is you DO have to leave your windows open to allow all the moisture out of the car, but inside a garage, of course. And the other bad news is your car might smell like crap for months to come. Good luck. |

happened to me before in other cars (you are lucky it wasnt a benz as the automatic shifter/window switches/etc short out)
in the sun: what i did was lay some beach towels on the rug then place something heavy (old books w/e u dont need) and let it sit for a few hours x 2-3 times overnight: damp rid in the car no towels last: put baby powder (talc) on the rug let sit for a bit and vacuum. its a pain but it works to get the smell out |
