You could argue, despite the F8X/G8X being heavy cars, they will post lap times faster than the E9XM3 in the same "clubsport" build.

Similarly, you could argue the same for Porsches. Look at how large they have become, but their performance matches.

The E9XM just requires too much investment to be as fast. It can weigh under 3000lbs with the right money, parts, and effort, but it severely lacks power, which holds it back if you're still around 3200lbs.

An E36 with an S54 swap is difficult to resist if your sole goal is to achieve fast lap times.

So, to answer your question, I think the E9X is fine where it's at. You're right, we are running low on options in the near future.

However, I would subsequently replace my E9XM3 with the early 996 chassis, which comes in at 2900lbs, if I wanted to build a dedicated track car.
interesting. i feel like i'm on the precipice of either spending WAY more money on the E90, or bailing and getting a dual duty car like a G80. Aiming to hit 10 track days this year but I don't see myself getting into racing / clubsport any time soon...

I think I have an M3 problem.

I'm sort of in the same boat and I did make a massive purchase last year by buying Nitrons... but I also haven't met one of my goals since owning this car, which is getting it into the 1:55 club at Buttonwillow. Once I improve as a driver and actually fix the things that need to be addressed, I hope to achieve that goal. After that's done, I plan to buy an ESS G1 and end up with my "ideal" street car to drive the 10 miles to work.

I also just have a fixation with the 996 C2 and the 996 RSR, and I want one to replace the M3 as a track car as I become more financially available. (The M96 would be getting tossed out the window and replaced with a different engine... Perhaps a K24 Turbo swap? With a RSR body kit?? long term project)

But I'm with you; I would rather have a G80 M3 as the ideal replacement if I'm going for the dual duty car solution. However, since my wife is looking to get her own car soon, I won't have to worry about buying another daily driver.

but I also have 2 other projects that need to be done... my IS300 1JZ swap and my FC RX7 project with my father (he owned 3 along with his brother) an unfortunate dilemma

This may not be the cleanest example, but it's a ballpark representative of the range I see track prepped 996s for: https://www.racingjunk.com/track-day...e&np_offset=71

You could dollar for dollar divest from the E92 M3 right into one of these.

i could probably cover 1/4 of that car by just selling my spare (original) S65 motor lol.

but that's a good case example! super under-rated right now.. market only going to get worse if you're looking at clean examples.
