S65 Valve Cover Bolts Rubber Grommet - Alternatives

Saw some talk about using m62tu grommets so that the bolts can be re-used when doing valve covers.

I bought a few sets to examine and these are my findings:

Left: Original S65
Middle: 11121721879 - M62tu
Right: 11121437395 - M62tu

My thoughts: None of them fit like the original. The ID of the middle one is too small and not able to fit over the S65 bolt easily. The OD of both are too large.

Outcome: I won't be using these, I ordered $243 worth of S65 valve cover bolts.

It also seals the area around the bolts from oil coming out. While it might work, I'm not interested in having something smashed in there and not sealing properly.

11127501588 is #12 below for the plastic ignition cover. Completely different part.

link to which ones you are talking about?

I don't see any under the categories I checked.

Part# 11127501588 is not it.
This grommet goes on the plastic cover over the ignition coils to hold it in.

AFAIK there is no 100% exact replacement, see above alternatives which do not fit well imo.

Only option is to buy the BMW ones with the bolts for close to $10/each.

I may have found a possible option, looks very close but need to have an actual bolt to compare. Not going to take one off my car so plan to buy 1 and see. If it works will let you guys know. Might be a good deal cheaper.

EDIT: Well, not so much. Very similar to the one on the right in tdott's first pic, maybe a little closer but still will not fit correctly. Sorry, another swing and a miss....

FYI there are no alternatives within the entire BMW parts bin to replace just the rubber grommets on these valve covers. It has been researched exhaustively and has been a point of contention for years.

You just gotta pay up.

These gromets are pretty stiff look and feel the same as oem. At the end of the day u are either out a little more than 100 bucks or saved.

Seems like the joke is those trying to save a couple hundred dollars on a critical part of an expensive engine.

Thanks, yes looks like we now finally have a solution (long over due imo) same ones darkbmw mentioned above.

The small rubber seals that seal the bolt securing the valve cover is a critical part to the engine?

Securing the valve cover and ensuring no leaks, yes. Critical might be the wrong word, but important. Again saving $200 by finding some untested solution. Meh

It's a small rubber seal, some have used the ones mentioned above from other motors which are not even close to the same size.

It's not rocket science.

It's just silly that BMW doesn't offer it separately and forces you to replace the bolt to get it.

I understand what it is, I'm saying the risk incurred for $200 savings is stupid. But obviously do as you do.

The risk isn't high though, worst of the worst, you'll have a leak and have to spend money on the OEM insanely overpriced part.

However if we invest in this trying this one out, we may:

1. Prove it works well and help everyone save.
2. Encourage more of this/competition and perhaps lower the cost further.

Because at the end of the day its quite ridiculous to pay this price for bolts and rubber.

It's an infrequent item, you're not changing the valve covers or gaskets every 50k miles.

Yes, you could save $200. If it fails and you have to remove and reinstall everything you'll just be out your time, new gaskets, and possibly the other related hardware (tubes, other bolts, assembly items, etc).

I've done mine, it's not a complex job. But it's not where I'd like to spend the little valuable time I have to work on the car.
