Poll: Carbon Fiber roof or Sunroof?

Which will you choose?

I am torn. The CF roof looks fantastic, but I like having a sunroof. To me the M3 is really too heavy to be a pure sportscar anyway, so why not enjoy the sun and breeze a little more while you listen to that amazing V8 music?

Which will you choose?

You know, I think the CF roof is very cool. But every car I've owned has had a moonroof. It's to the point where if I don't have the light shining it, it's a bit claustrophobic for me. I like the open-ness of the moonroof. If it's a no cost option, I'll probably opt for it.

I love to hear the sound of the engine and nothing comes close to driving thru a tunnel with the sunroof and windows open.

I have sat in an M6 with CF roof with no sun roof and it feels very claustofabix. The CF roof may offer a few tenths of performance increase, but I dont care. I am not racing my car and a few tenths of performance loss is of no significance.

Also, the resale value of cars with CF room will probaly be lower than the ones with the CF roof. CF roof is something only the hard core enthausists will opt for and the market for CF room will be small when you look at the overall sales for 4-5 years.

As I am finding out, heated seats, power everything, nav, etc help immensely when you are selling your M3.

Don't only hardcore enthusiasts buy M3s anyways?

I couldn't say which I would pick....I love my sunroof on my 330Ci...

Not according too the poll

Anyway; I think reselling the M3 whitout the CF roof is way more difficult, the CF roof is the most important feature that sets it apart from other cars ( engine too off course), if you want a sunroof, you can buy any other car that comes to mind

CF roof everytime. It was the CSL's coolest feature and that's enough for me to want one.

Precisely my thought! But, if they do offer a sunroof, I would probably go for it. Also, I'm a little worried about this CF roof. For one thing, it is carbon-fiber REINFORCED PLASTIC, so not really carbon fiber anyway (I think), plus, will it stand the test of time or will we be reading about these roofs cracking in 2 years?

CFRP is what is known as wet carbon fiber. it is cheaper, more durable to the elements, etc. dry carbon fiber (pure cf) does not lend itself to take any sort of everyday beating.

Yes they are. It's a no charge option. It's in the German price list. Option 403.

While the CF roof may save a few pounds, I doubt it will make a difference in performance. CF looks very nice, but I cant imgaine having an M3 witout a sun roof.....the sensation of speed is enhanced by having the windows down and the sun roof open.

I currently have an E46 cab and going fast with the top down is a unique experience. You hear the sound of the sound of the engine echoing off the walls and other cars..it is awesome.

CF or Sunroof

This will be a tough call.

Since the current M3's my wife's, and the new one will be her's also, she will most likely opt for the sunroof version.

The "few" times I get to drive it, I enjoy the view up.

At only 11 lbs difference between the CF roof and the metal roof (without sunroof) I think the overall difference with the sunroof may be 50lbs. I will probably track the car only 2 or 3 times a year. And the difference in performance will be small. I can enjoy the sunroof 365 days a year. I think I have to go with the sunroof.

However I was at my dealer Thursday night and the CF roof does look cool on the M6.

I have a carbon fiber wing (standard) on my Evo 8. Mitsubishi has had some issues with the plastic gloss coating wearing off of the wings. I left some bird poop on my wing for too long (maybe a week) and there is now a dull mark and a tiny pinhole in the CF coating on my wing where the poop was. Not that BMW would ever create a product of this quality... but, "food for thought".... I'm not convinced coated CF is as durable as painted metal. Someone with a carbon fiber hood might chime in.....

do your research. german options list clearly indicates the moonroof is a no cost option which will delete the carbon fiber roof.
