▀▄ eas | Macht Schnell UDP/Stage 2 Intake & Akrapovic Dyno Findings

As it is with most M3 enthusiasts, we are always on a search for more power. Finding this additional power can be tricky on the S65 engine, but if you search hard enough - it's there and can be utilized:

Pictured above are two 2011 M3s, similarly-equipped with bolt-on modifications.

Vehicle Info:
Vehicle: 2011 BMW M3 (Alpine White, left)
Transmission: DCT
Modifications: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit w/ Intake Scoops, Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, Challenge Race+ X-Pipe (Catless), Akrapovic Slip-On Titanium Exhaust System
Software: Stock
Fuel: 91 Octane

Vehicle: 2011 BMW M3 (Mineral White, right)
Transmission: DCT
Modifications: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit w/ Intake Scoops, Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, Akrapovic Evolution Titanium Exhaust System
Software: Stock
Fuel: 91 Octane

Parts being installed:

2011 BMW M3 (Alpine White)
Dynorun 21: Baseline
Dynorun 30: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Stock Exhaust
Dynorun 33: Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, OEM Intake, Stock Exhaust
Dynorun 36: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, Stock Exhaust
Dynorun 52: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, Challenge Race+ X-Pipe (Catless), Akrapovic Slip-On Titanium Exhaust System

Vehicle: 2011 BMW M3 (Mineral White)
Dynorun 2: Baseline
Dynorun 7: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, Stock Exhaust
Dynorun 16: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, Akrapovic Evolution Titanium Exhaust System

Vehicle: 2011 BMW M3 (Alpine White) vs. 2011 BMW M3 (Mineral White)
Dynorun 21: Baseline - 2011 Alpine White M3
Dynorun 52: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Challenge Race+ X-Pipe (Catless), Akrapovic Slip-On Titanium Exhaust System - 2011 Alpine White M3
Dynorun 2: Baseline - 2011 Mineral White M3
Dynorun 16: Macht Schnell Stage 2 Intake Charge Kit, Macht Schnell S65 Performance Underdrive Pulleys, Akrapovic Evolution Titanium Exhaust System - 2011 Mineral White M3

While its easy to look at peak gains, its important to see the area under the curve, which shows where the power is truly gained. In this example, we see that removing the catalytic converters (replacing with Race+ X-pipe/Akra Slip-On exhaust combo) resulted in a 10hp/10ft lb loss in midrange (4K-5K) while still reaching equivalent numbers as the full Akrapovic Evolution-equipped M3 in top end.

Overview:
- Approximate 40 peak hp gain 20ft-lb TQ from simple bolt-on mods
- Power numbers are easily replicated between different vehicles
- Increased acceleration, throttle response
- Aggressive intake & exhaust note
- OEM+ look & appearance
- Easy DIY
- Approximately 2-3 hours install time

This shows that the stock ECU does a very good job at adapting to bolt-on modifications and the power numbers can be replicated on different platforms. We have equipped a handful of M3s with the same equipment, all giving similar results and making the M3 an absolutely blast to drive. Choosing the correct mods to work together as a system will give you the best overall driving experience.

The quest for more power continues, software should be the key to easily allow one to approach the 400hp club.

Will we be able to see some direct comparisons between the Macht Schnell drop-in air filter and the Macht Schnell chargepipe with filter? That's the closest comparison we'll ever get between chargepipe to chargepipe, since an aftermarket filter will be used in both instances, I think.

I had my car on the dyno at EAS a few weeks ago and made +10HP & +10TQ with the MS Stage 2 compared to my BMC drop in filter.

And yes, you can feel the extra power and you can really hear it as well

1+1 clearly != 2 when it comes to bolt on parts for power.

I wouldn't call them simple bolt-ons either. They are ALL costly bolt-ons

Very nice tests indeed.

Great Job Tom. This is the kind of comparative dynos that are needed in the Aftermarket space. These results provide good data to for those who are skeptical on gains from filters and pulleys, especially when used together. Naturally, a catless X-pipe does provide the most bang for the buck, but it seems that solid gains can be made from the combo you provided.

Awesome write up. Consistency is defintely key and these aren't fluke numbers since it has been replicated with the same mods on a handful of M3's in my group of friends . Thanks for showing off my pretty dyno runs Tom! Now I can't sand bag people at the track lol j/k

Now this is the type of data collection that I am talking about!! Great work EAS and to all the manufacturers of the aforementioned products. It goes to show that with the right combination of products, you can gain a substantial amount of power while staying naturally aspirated. To even make it a more controlled data collection, I wonder how the Alpine White E92 would perform with a full Akrapovic Evolution or how the Mineral White would perform with a Challenge Race+ X Pipe?

Not to be a stickler or anything, but I'm assuming in DynoRun 52 you guys had the MS UDP's installed, despite it not being listed?

Again, great work!

Great info! This is the stuff I love to see on this website...not "which color m3 should I get"

I would be interested to see what power would be put down if your tune was included in this comparo. It is also interesting that going cat less really didn't add up to much more power...about 7 hp from baseline compared to the Akra setup.

Good catch, D52 was indeed equipped with pulleys for that run.

Correction has been made, thanks!

Nice numbers! I wonder if the MS intake works better than the AFE because it has so much larger a filter (the AFE Stage 2 is smaller than stock)

Generally speaking, the more surface area (ie: larger filter) translates to higher air flow, so technically - yes.

Do you mean +10HP and +10TQ to the crank, or to the wheel? Corrected or uncorrected? Sorry, I'm just finding it surprising that a chargepipe alone would gain 10 wheel (since you say you compared it against BMC) so I'm curious and I ask. BMC is supposed to get 6-8 wheel, right? So theoretically, this pipe adds ~10 wheel on top of that, alone?

Sorry for all the questions, thanks for taking the time to respond.

i can't believe you gain even more power (and that much!) from this motor. amazing.

any videos available inside & out for sound purposes?

I'm new to the game so I have to ask how much would the entire kit cost (385whp)? I know it's going to be a lot, but I have time on my side.

No, this is not necessarily true, only if the smaller filter is actually a restriction. It could be, but it's not necessarily true. More surface area in general is better, but only if it's not enough. (assuming similar flowing filter mediums, which the AFE and MS should be)

+10HP and +10TQ to the wheels on the roller dyno. I know EAS has my runs on file; perhaps they can post them

I believe the gain in power (IMO) was about 80% from the charge pipe and 20% from the larger and slightly cleaner filter.

I think the BMC gave maybe 2-3 WHP which is negligible but did add a little bit more induction noise. The MS Stage 2 at WOT sounds like it wants to suck in cats and small children.

I don't mind the questions at all; I prefer people actually realize there are more intake options when it comes to the E9x M3 than just drop in filters.
