If so, it's the outside pad rattling inside the pad carrier.

I had a set of PFC08's without anti rattle clips on the outboard side of the rotors, and that's exactly what it did....drove me nuts for about the week, then I got used to them.
Yes, the crickets stop with any brake pedal pressure.

I'm certain it's the front pads making the noise. They're touching the rotor when the brakes aren't being applied.

The Pagids have all the clips that the stock pads have and I did re-install the anti-rattle spring on all calipers.

Today I didn't notice the sound on my way to work until I actually arrived in the office parking lot. My commute is just less than 4 miles but maybe it's going away? I have probably 75 miles on these pads now.

Just give it some time. When I installed PF01's on my stock brakes there wasn't any anti-rattle clips and it sounded like this. You'll be fine and likely after your track event, you won't have any more problems.

Good luck and have fun this weekend!

Thanks Steve - was hoping to see your name on the registration list! Alas, it is not

I know. I wish I could have made it. I've been too busy to track this year. Perhaps next spring we can hit some courses together. I'm considering an E46M or an M-Coupe.

Don't need to do anything, in my opinion. Break pad noise is produced by the pads rattling in the bracket, while braking. Starting with e90 there's a new system there to prime or dry the pads. So the car would brake a little from time to time on it's own, thats why 2006-on cars seem to produce way more brake dust than e46s did. That also may be why you heard the cricket noise as the pads get initially ground to the disk. If the cricket noise was produced by hitting the high spots on the disk or disk hitting a bent shield, the frequency would be one hit per rotation and the noise would be constant and would increase with the wheel RPMs. There are some brake anti-squeal products on the market. You might want to give those a shot, if the sound is too annoying. I wouldnt worry, though.
