need help deciding-Corvette vs Porsche

I am looking into getting either a used 02'-06' Porsche Carerra 911or 04'-08'Corvette c6.

My question is to those who have owned either of these cars. Any reasons I should NOT buy one of these cars. I’m leaning more towards a c6 just because I feel you get more bang for the buck but I’d like to hear why certain people who have experience with them, would not buy another one or would.

Thanks for any advice given.

I know you're looking for people's opinions who have actually driven these cars, but as a frequent browser of M3forum, it would seem the natural upgrade from an M3 would be to a Porsche. However, there may or may not be German bias there. You cannot beat that power you get with the 'Vette

If I could afford it, I'd love me a 996 Turbo

Wut?

The Corvette is the easier machine to work on at home.
This is not the same as saying that Corvettes are more reliable; I think they're less reliable than Porsche.

Haven't you heard that old saw about Porsche and other higher-end marques?

Audi--repair daily.
Mercedes--boring and repair daily.
Ferrari--comes with its own mechanic.
Porsche--reliable, but you'll need to lift the engine out to change the spark plugs. Bring your bank account with you.

Buy as new of a Porsche as you can. I would avoid the 996, in your case the 02-04, as well as the 05 997, as they had RMS (rear main seal) and IMS (intermediate shaft) issues, that to a lesser degree also afflict the 997 version 1 variant up to and including the 08 model. I 've never been a Corvette fan, 2 of my brothers have owned various models but that only strengthened my negative impression. I am a Porsche person, have a 993, and am looking at the latest version 997. Forget the specs, drive them both, you will know which one is right for you.

z06 and zr1 arn't in my $ range =[

my issue is the price range I would be looking in...is $30-35k range...the vettes seem to have a bit more of a sporty look/feel (and have less millage than the 911's)...if i could afford to get a 911 turbo with the body kits and wide fenders, and etc. i would die for that, but thats not in my price range.

Also I do not work on my cars, luckly i have a long time mechanic but nonetheless I assume both will cost me alot to repair.

I hear the new porsche CPO program is pretty good. Look for some pre-owned with a warranty.

Geez, My first post and I'm weighing in on Porsches! (I pick up my 2010 335xi in two days!) I'm a Pcar guy too. I've had a 2006 Boxster and currently have a 2009 997.2 911. I would definitely go with the Porsche, but you need to drive both. As far as which 911-great deals on 996s to be had , but I would go for a 2004 only. Most of the 996 bugs worked out by then. 2006-2008 911s more desirable in my opinion. They just look more like classic 911's. Agree with above about RMS leaks and IMS problems but 997.1s still have both issues, albeit less frequently. IMS deleted in 997.2 engines (new in 2009).

The dreaded HPFP failures have been fairly common though in the 997.2s. I will probably have both cars die at the same time!

Have fun in whatever you decide on!

I personally am a huge fan of Porsches, but the carerras in the price range im looking seem too plain.

I can pick up an 05' c6 for like $28k that has 20k miles. so when comparing, the vette seems like the better deal. although i have yet to drive either, so its hard to say till then.

You seem like a huge Porsche fan, are the 996's really that bad?

Are you looking at adding this car to your 330i?

If you are not and this car is going to be your DD ---- then neither. I've owned them both and then some and neither one of them is conducive for daily driving.

If it's a second car --- Vette all the way. 996's (save for the 996TT) do nothing for me. Actually, I'm selling (trading) my 997S tomorrow for an '09 E90 335i. I thought I could make the 997S work as a DD and after 10 months of trying, I have given up.

Make no mistake: Corvettes are performance monsters. Their acceleration--ahead and sideways--is phenomenal. Brakes are world-class.

Their only real lack: interior quality and public perception ("oh he must be going through a mid-life crisis", or "he must be one of those gold-chain wearing dudes").

What is the reason you don't like regular C6's as apposed to z06/zr1s? They don't have as much hp or they aren't as aggressive looking as the z06 or zr1?

Regular C6 Vettes will still destroy E92 M3's, performance wise.

How about a Lotus Elise/Exige? Used ones are around that price range.

performance wise they are probably up there too, but not my cup of tea. I'd love to get my hands on a dodge viper, but they're big $$$

IMO, buying used is ALWAYS worse then buying new simply because you NEVER know how the car was treated. Sure you may get a few more hp , and a nicer name plate on the car if its used, but at the end of the day your still driving a car that had another owner, and it has natural wear and tear on it , etc etc. If your looking to spend 30-35k I would highly recommend waiting a few months and driving a 2011 5.0 Mustang GT. You can have one nicely optioned for a very good price. Just an FYI a 2011 Mustang GT ran around the Gingerman raceway with on par times with a E92 M3. So the age old Mustangs are P.O.S ,and can only go fast in a straight line is a dead debate. I may be a bit bias as I have purchased a 2010 mustang gt , but as an enthusiast who loves all type of cars I would still honestly recommend looking at one.

you make a great point and I have also thought of this. BUT in my opinion, a big reason I don't mind buying used, if you can find the right car is that you don't have that massive debreciation hit.

If i were to spend $60k and for what ever extreme financial reason would need to get rid of the car, I would suffer a very big loss.

In terms of buying a new mustang, I'm looking for more luxury and although most won't admit it, the badge does feed the ego. But in terms of pure perfomance your probably right.

In your price range, buy a used Cayman. I have been to numerous Porsche driving schools where we used Caymans, and they are phenomenal cars. They don't have tons of power, but if you buy an S version, you will learn more about driving than you can imagine. On a short track, I can keep up with the 911s.

true, but I'm not a huge fan of the body style, and I'm looking for the raw power in which ever car I end up buying.
