Trade in values 2008 E90

obviously values will be different based on options, mileage etc. But I was wondering if anyone has traded in their 2008 e90 lately and what did you get?

I have 37k miles on mine. 6mt, every option possible.

I'd say you'd get in the low 30s. You could private it for low 40s

My brother (not on forum) has an E90 M3. He told me his dealer called him asking him to trade his car in.

Reason: used E9X M3s are in high demand. Something with the Japan earthquake causing delays in production, or so he was told. He passed (he loves the car - said it's better at the track than his RS4), but i'm guessing that you can get pretty good value if the dealer's assertions are true. If you think you're getting hosed, just sell it yourself or go through a local consignment dealer.

Go to KBB.com and edmunds.com, and be truthful about age, condition, etc. (meaning if it's exceptionally clean, rate it as "good").

Average the two, and that will give you trade-in value, which tends to be quite high, compared to reality.

While you're there, check out what those folks think is the going rate for M3s in your area. This'll give you a decent starting point.

Understand that the dealer is in business to make money, both on new cars and used, so you will not be able to get, say, an "invoice" deal on the new one while simultaneously getting KBB or Edmunds pricing on the trade. Both KBB and Edmunds assume full retail on the new one to get to their trade numbers.

As I said, it's a for-profit business, so if you get a killer deal on the new one, you'll get a trade value at perhaps 10% under, or even a bigger dicount than that.

If you're serious about buying, you'll know you've got a killer deal from that dealer's perspective if you negotiate enough to finally get the general sales manager (one step up from the floor manager) to throw up his or hands in disgust and say "Write it up!".

You'll never get to that point unless they think you're dead-nuts serious about buying that day - and they'll cut you loose if they simply can't meet your "number".

When one of my sons bought a used 997S, the dealer let us walk, and we did. However, after some discussion at home, my son called back and said he'd reconsider the deal if the dealer was willing to throw some things in, including the "autobahn" front-end protection package and some other things.

Bingo. High-profit items for the dealer, and my son was willing to meet the price, particularly because he was planning those items anyway, but hadn't mentioned that...

This kind of thing works best if there's respect on both sides - meaning they think you're dead serious, and you don't think they're crooks. They're seeking to make a good profit, and you're trying to get the best deal. Fair's fair on both sides.

PS - Bring the KBB and Edmunds printouts with you. Feign confusion when they give you a lower number.

PPS - When somebody tells you "I got $60K for mine.", pay no attention. Each deal is different - and this is the Internet, after all.

around $32k? The problem is, it all depends on how much you're willing to get reamed on the other end (I mean your new purchase).

If you're getting reamed on your purchase, then dealer may give you a "better" trade value, but at the end of the day, you're still getting reamed.

Know what I'm saying? The dealer wants to maximize the price you pay for new car and minimize the price they give you for your trade, this maximizes their profit and increases your reaming experience.

Best way to gauge is to see how much E90 2008 comparable milage is selling at at dealer-only auctions, then subtract around $500 or so, again depends on how much profit they making off you off the other end (new car, financing)

Dealers play the number game a lot, you might think you're getting 42k for your car but they just marked the other one 4k more.

Sell it privately and you'll be around 39-42500. Then again trading in saves you around 3k in taxes.

That's an old marketing trick to get you to come in. All brands seem to so it these days, yet people fall for it.

I got a trade in quote from two BMW dealers for my E90 (26k miles at the time a few months ago). They were $37k and $40k though the one at $37 said it would improve once spring/summer rolled around. As others have said it is highly dependent on the deal you get (or don't) on the new car.

Just traded in my 08 lease with 20k miles (e92). Residual was $34k+ and dealer gave me another $5k. M3 used market is big right now. Everyone wants them before summer.

Really, sir, we just can't find any new ones so we are paying top dollar for used ones now. Honest. Do you have any used contact lenses or an old loaf of bread perhaps? Because I will pay you full retail for those too. All you have to do is buy a $3000 extended warranty.

Yeah, i told my brother they are FOS. There might be a one or two week delay for new ones, but people aren't climbing over each other to overpay for used E9Xs.

The car is definitely holding it's value well though. AIRYBODY LOVE DEM M3s.

yeah, but you can't argue this with the dealer. He's min price he'll pay for your car straight with no trade would be auction clearing price for comparable car.

I'm saying the Manheim data is valid floor prices dealers are willign to take to buy your car outright.

looks like my car is holding value.

I got a fully loaded 2008 E90 in summer of 2010 for $46k cash w 8k miles. So the dealer today would pay $42-$45k at auction for comparable miles (i have 15k now). Not bad, but notice there's a clear premium on cars below say 20k miles.
