In the M3, that gauge comes up to temp much more quickly than I've ever seen for oil temps.
The benefit of a low volume tightly controlled water cooling system is that it heats up very quickly which in turn heats up the oil quickly (also aided by the thermostatically controlled oil cooler). The rate that the oil temp guage rises seems completely normal and comparable to my last car (a water cooled 911).

Tom, how are you reading these values? Is the install going to be PITA? I'd love to see something like the PLX obd2 guage with access to more sensors than just those available via OBD2. The Autoenginuity software for the E46M3 could see every sensor in the car....in the E90 that would be a killer app - easily worth $500-750.

I have no problem seeing the gauges in the current position, the gauges we will be using have peak recall as well. I've worked with the PLX Gauges since we saw them at SEMA about 3 years ago, I'm really not a fan of digital gauges at all.

IMHO - some things just need to remain simple. Needle position in your peripheral vision can give a quick read while still keeping your hands on the road during spirited driving.

Everyone: thanks for all the feedback, seems like this is going to be a hit. Keep the suggestions coming.

FWIW: Oil Level really isn't something that needs to be monitored on a constant (real-time) basis like pressure and temp gauges.

I'm not aware of anyone that offers one, much less one that matched our interiors if one did exist.

The net of my question is: Where are you reading the values from? Engine computer, or do we need to install the sensors as well?

These would be read from separate gauge-specific sending units, not from OBDII info.
