BMW stopped M3 production in 2010?
I tried ordering a brand new M3 but dealer told me BMW won't be producing any more M3s until further notice.
He mentioned the global economic situation as the reason. However, I have read speculation that BMW is not producing the M3 for good. The M3 is an outstanding deal in the market these days (price/performance), and is cannibalizing its vehicle lineup. Now that BMW is coming out with the new 5 series and specially the new M5, they wanna make sure they're a success. Could this M3 rumor make sense?.. hope not. |

Didn't hear that report but it makes for an interesting story. My guess is that BMW cut production for MY2010 early so they can prep the cars for the E92/E93 facelift.

If the 2011 model comes out this Spring, that sucks for those of us who purchased 2009's late in the production run. Basically, 9 months after purchasing my 2009, a 2011 is available.

Yup. By my understanding, in May 2010, MY 2011 M3s will be available stateside. In 2005 (I think), Audi released a "2005.5" as a refresh or something (new tails as I recall). But, people are saying that the next M3 will be a 2011. So, the 2011 MY runs 18 months??? 2009s will be two years old in about 3 months (hence the $4500 marketing support for remaining ones) and 2010s will suffer, too. It's interesting to say the least. Seems like a good time to be in the used market. AND, there are rumors of a 4-5% price bump on the 2011s.

Certainly hope production does not stop... I have a 2011 E90 on order, expected delivery is April (March production). I purchased in mid-December from a BMW dealer in Toronto.

But there are three things I thought I would mention. If you really have a 2011 "on order" your dealer is just sitting on the deposit you gave them as there are no allocations for 2011 cars yet, meaning they cant even physically order a 2011 yet. If the dealer actually placed the order for your car, you would have a production #. That being said, M3's have typically had a 10 week production cycle from when you get your production #. So if your car is set for March production it is highly unlikely you will receive your car in April. I am planning on ordering in March for a June delivery. Third is if there is even going to be a 2011 e90 M3. There have been rumors. And hints by insiders about some model deletions for 2011. But there is nothing confirmed. At this point we are all waiting for either an announcement from BMWNA like the recent ones about the Z4 ans 335is and 5 series, or for our dealerships to get their February order allocations for March production. At that point we will know if we can order 2011 e90 M3s, and youll get your production # with a realistic delivery time frame. D |

Got a quote for $500 over invoice for fully loaded 2010 M3 to be delivered in a month to 2 months from now. I think it depends on the allocation the specific dealership has, correct me if I'm wrong and... should I accept this offer?

From what I know, there are no new allocations for 2010's. Your dealer may have a car in production that they can modify. Maybe one of the last ones they ordered and it fell through. If you can look at the build sheet, pick the options you want, and actually get a production #, go for it.
But you may be able to get a 2010 off a lot in a month for a lot less if they annouce 2011's are ready to be ordered... D |

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

This is just ridiculous. So you shouldn't get the first MY of a new generation because the bugs haven't been worked out yet. Can't get the second or third year because they're gonna screw you with a refresh, then by the time you get to the fourth or fifth year, you're too close to the next gen coming out so you have to wait for the next greatest thing. So when should you buy one?
Two things I've learned: 1. Don't make car buying decisions based on percieved, possible resale value. Get what you want when you can get it and enjoy it. Obsessing about future BMW stratagies affecting your resale value is pointless. 2. There will always be something better right around the corner. Get over it and enjoy what you've got when you got it, otherwise you will never be happy. |

You are at least half right about #2: Something is always just around the corner. Whether it's better or not depends on the person judging. When to buy? Varies according to the individual. Circumstances come into play as well (e.g. needs new car, lease is up, crashed current car, etc..,) No doubt it is tricky with the upsides and downsides for various model years. Typically, third year is the earliest I am comfortable with purchasing. Where the E9x M3 is the subject, this V8 generation is IMHO going to be one for the ages. It is such a great car in so many ways. I will use it primarily as a GT. Initially, ordering an '10 was the plan. With the truncating of '10 production...stop everything. Now I'll probably wait for the last model year. Any perceived or real pain during the wait is more than offset by the certainty that the additional goodies included in the late year models of the generation will make for having-your-cake-and-getting-to-eat-it-too-situation.
