Valentine Day Blowout

POT WH*RE are not your friend. Oh, I mean HOLE.

I was on my way to break fast this morning. As I was merging on to the freeway from an on ramp. doing about 75-85, "BAM!" TPM alert went off. My front left tire had ran over a pot hole. First thought after the horrible sound was , second thought, my rims are F%^&. I managed to pull safely over to the side of the freeway, got out to inspect the damage. Rim looked over, but there a nice tear on the side wall of the tire. Long story short, BMW Assist towed my car to San Diego BMW. SA told me new tires and general alignment and suspension inspection are going to be ~$500. Dealer did not have tire in stock, and because of the poor economy there were no service technician working on Sat. To top it off, loaner vehicle are now $25.

The moral of the story is....19"+ rims and low profiles are . Pot holes are . Buy rims and tire insurance!

If, my rims are bent, Tom from EAS will be hearing from me for a set of Gun Metal V710.

Thanks for reading my Valentine Day whine-post.

Sorry to see that blow out, but be happy you were able to pull over safely.

This is the reason I don't understand why so many people here love 20" rims here. Spend $5k on some wheels and they're going to get toasted at some point.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

For sure, I like big rims and low profile tires but CA freeway are crap.

Hey Kevin,
tough luck!. I've never had a blowout but I've had multiple screws/nails in my tires. FYI, the road hazard insurance I mentioned to you earlier, you can check it out at bimmerfest in the sponsors section. Flow BMW in NC offer 4K rim/tire total coverage, no limit per incident for about $370. Works fine in CA, apparently.
Make sure you check the insurance offered by tire shops they may prorate based on thread depth. Costco has similar coverage included in tire price (only covers tires of course).

You shoudda included a photo of your car, the color looks good in the close ups!

PS how did the car handle on the blowout?.

It handled surprisingly well. The car did not drift to the left too much as one would expect from a front left tire blowout. I had a blown out on the font right tire on a 91 Acura Legend. So the steering wheel feel was very similar. Feels like driving on a gravel road. I'll call Flow BMW regarding the rims and tires insurance. Hopefully, nothing serious happened to the suspension. I think I just overly baby the car. We'll see when the SA calls me.

??? Interesting. I was under the impression that M3 came with run-flat. Looking at my pictures, I guess they don't. WOW!

Oh, BMW Assist lady asked if I had a spare? lol.... The tow truck guy asked the same thing.

If you make an unbreakable product, give it some time and someone will break it. I think we're better at breaking things than making things.

I should apply to work for BMW R&D. Destructive driver testing....

What we have is that Tire Kit in our trunk that sprays some stuff to seal up the puncture in the tire until you get it repaired.

sales guy actually told me they were runflats when I was buying the car, even though I knew they weren't. Runflats wouldn't qualify for the performance aspect of M cars. Look the other 3 series threads and see how many people have ditched the runflats for a bunch of reasons.
I had runflats on my E90 330i and they sucked.
Sidewalls were too stiff, the car had no traction on rough pavement or in wet and no-one would repair them. A flat==a new tire.
Ride was hard and noisy. I went through 11 tires in 3 years. One full set replacement on recall (uneven wear and excessive noise) and 3 punctures.

PS If the tire doesn't have the RFT designator marked on the rubber, it isn't a runflat.
