![]() ![]() Specifications: BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine UPDATE: Pictures of the engine have been added! Tonight, BMW dropped a bit of a bombshell, very discreetly and buried within a press release about a new edition to the BMW X1 family. BMW has as of now officially launched the new BMW X1 xDrive28i, which uses a new 4-cylinder engine. For now this unit has been announced on the X1 only, but expect this motor to filter all throughout the BMW lineup, in its quest to satisfy fuel efficiency regulatory requirements. This new engine is a 2.0L gas powered 4-Cylinder engine which uses BMWs TwinPower turbo technology, good for 245HP and 350Nm of torque. This engine is closely modelled after its 6-cylinder brethern N54 and uses an all-aluminium crankcase, precision direct fuel injection, with VALVETRONIC. The inevitable comparison: Audi Comparing this engine to the 2.0T FSI used by Audi/VW, that engine produces 211HP. This translates to the BMW engine producing about 34 HP over the Audi and can propel the X1 to 60MPH in 6.1seconds while the 2.0T in a larger A4 can only achieve 6.4seconds, a gain of 0.3s. On the face of it, this engine outdoes the VW sourced unit, and it seems that this motor is flexible enough to come in a range of displacements and tunes for increased horsepower if need be. We will also have to wait and see about turbo lag, but I expect it to be minimal. Below is a table summarizing the important specifics surrounding this engine.
Here is BMW's official Press release about this engine. PRESS RELEASE

Sweet, I wonder if this is the same engine that is slated to go in the Z4.

those aren't bad numbers at all... sounds like it'll be like the 2.0T Audi has... but better of course.

This is long over due.
This needs to be utilized in the 1 series and possibly even the 3 series as an A4 2.0T competitor. 120 | 320 135 | 335 1M | M3 |

350Nm translates to about 255lb/ft of torque.
So, 245hp and 255lb/ft... very respectable numbers, equal to or better than the N52, with tons of low-end torque and a big MPG enhancement. I'll admit that I'll miss the N52 out of nostalgia, but this new engine looks very promising.

I'm sure it is going to replace the N52 in all models-- Z4 and 528i this year, and then 1er and 3er as the next generations are launched in the next couple of years.

245HP and 350Nm of torque out of a 2.0 with 35.7 mpg are very solid numbers, I can't wait to see this engine proliferate throughout the rest of the lineup.

2.0L turbo 245hp ?
Didn't Honda 10 years ago produce a 2.0L N/A 240hp engine for the S2000 Am I missing something here? is Honda ahead of its time, or is BMW lagging behind. |

a far better engine than N52 IMO, and i liked that engine a lot. If you guys haven't noticed it seems ALL sorts of mfg are bring 2.0L turbo direct injected 4 cylinders to the market (GM, Audi/VW, BMW, Hyundia, etc).
The 2.0L turbos are great little engines. I've had the Audi 2.0T in the past that was tuned in a nicely modded Avant and it was quite quick and still got 30mpg's and was AWD. Tough to beat for a "base" engine! I love Turbo engines from the factory - SO MUCH power is available if you want it.

It isn't a matter of how much HP you can squeeze out of it. BMW has the I6 Turbo for more power, the new 2.0T is a fuel efficient replacement of the N52 I6 NA. If it's anything like the N54/N55, it is underrated and will really put out around 270-280hp at the crank. I can see Burger and Vishnu getting it close to the 300hp at the crank range with a piggy back tune as well.

Not really...that s2000 engine really needed to be reved in order to feel fast. Day to day driving with that engine felt no different than a civic.

Solid numbers for sure, hopefully that also means improved performance from the n55. This only leaves a 50hp gap getween the turbo 4 and turbo 6, be nice if they upped the n55 hp as a result.

Looks good. In a market where the base models of competitors all have force induction (A4 1.8T, C200 CGI) this is a smart move by BMW. The 2.0L NA unit in the 320i needs a serious upgrade, so hopefully they'll have a detuned version of this turbo 4 in the base model for non-US markets.

I'm not sure why the article compares it to the lesser of the VW/Audi 2.0T engines when the A4 uses the 211 hp/258 lb-ft version. So the BMW engine ups horsepower by 34 and matches the A4's torque...not as much of a gain as the article makes it seem. That being said, give me a 1-series with this engine and I'll give back the N51 in my car. I bet this new 2.0T is marginally lighter than the 3.0L NA I6 and it has way more torque produced at MUCH lower RPM than the N51/N52. If there's one thing I really don't like about the N51 in my car, it's the lack of torque. I agree with all the BMW I6 sentiments, but at this point, it's old technology. Of course, I've always wanted a small displacement turbocharged (to make up for the lack of displacement) I6, but I think that's a pipe dream!

Those figures a quite close to my 335D and with way better gas mileage... Dammit.
BMWs are finally becoming more fuel efficient. N52 in my experience wasn't that problem free with leaking gaskets, broken ignition coils, and lack of power. Hopefully this will be a better and more reliable alternative. |
