MPG display stopped working.

I got my M3 a few months ago and when I first got it, the MPG display was stating 99.9 mpg. Then it started working it's way down slowly to something like 38 mpg.

I was hoping it would keep averaging down to where it would eventually show me the true mpg rating. Then a few weeks ago it reset back to 99.9 mpg and hasn't been moving.

Does anyone know what happened? Did I do something to reset it?

Battery would be my guess. But it's just that, a guess.

I think the part that does the reading is called Fuel flow transducer. It might have failed or possibly some type of software issue.

Do you really care? I stopped looking at mine because it's never higher than 8mpg. Change the display to MPH and forget the other.

I'm bumping this up because I can't seem to find a clear answer on this issue.

The other day I was fumbling with my windshield sunscreen and it caught on the turn signal for a sec or 2. I finally got the stupid thing folded right and I see for a flash on the center display "Check Control" and then it went away. Driving home I was bored in traffic and checked out my avg. MPG reading and it’s at 99.9mpg. I figured it'd go back to normal after the car was shut off. 2 days later it’s still reading 99.9mpg.

So, what the hell did I do? There’s no other warning other than the daytime running light that I’ve been procrastinating on replacing for the last month. The car seems to be driving fine, but I'd like to know what is actually happening.

Mine went to 99.9 mpg for a few weeks and i couldn't figure out why. Then one day i noticed it had started working again. Never figured out why and never looked into it further. I am still on original battery and no other issues were occurring during the few weeks my mpg summary was at 99.9. Car is a 2013. Odd.

The reading you are talking about is your "trip average". The "real time mpg" display must be coded on as it is not a stock enabled feature because it's an M. When you reset your mileage after a gas fill up you are also resetting your trip, so 99mpg is displayed until you drive a while and it updates. If you want real time mpg you need to enable it in the kombi.

Nope. I have real time and overall mpg both displayed, I understand the difference. I reset my trip mileage after every single fill up and it has never once been accompanied by a reset of my overall average. My overall was at 18.1 and 18.2 for years. About 2 months ago, my real time display showed --.- out of the blue and my overall average was showing 99.9. It stayed like this for about 2 weeks. Then one day I turned on the car and my real time mpg was working again and my overall mpg started working it's way down from 99.9. Its now at 19.2 and I expect it to continue downward at a slower pace...I do a lot of highway miles. As stated in my previous post, I am on the original battery and there were no other issues with the car during that 2 week period. I never found out why the mpg displays stopped working for those 2 weeks.
