15 Junior Hockey Players Dead after Semi Blows Stop Sign

very, very sad day all across Canada today.

the Humboldt Broncos, a Junior Hockey team from Saskatchewan playing in the SJHL, were on their bus en route to a playoff game when a semi truck blew a stop sign, causing the team bus to t-bone the semi trailer.

of the 29 on board, including coaches & players, 14 were dead on scene, 3 in critical condition, & the rest all injured in some way, shape, or form. 1 of the 3 in critical has unfortunately lost his battle. the boys on the bus ranged in ages from 16-21

the driver of the semi was un-injured.

in less than 24 hours, over $1.2 million dollars has been raised in support of the Humboldt Broncos.

in a country like Canada, where hockey is a huge unifying force & everything to some of these boys, it truly is devastating. these boys were chasing a dream.... only to be crushed by an inconsiderate & life changing decision to blow a stop sign...

thoughts & prayers go to all affected by this atrocious disaster.

it really is, authorities say it's too early still to tell if there will be a criminal investigation. but I would imagine at least some of those parents would want to press charges....

Unimaginable. My heart goes out to these boys and their parents. The truck driver might be physically uninjured, but knowing he'll have to live with the fact he killed those boys due to his own negligence... mentally he'll be won't be able to cope with that.

So sad for the lost and their families. RIP.

Running lights is still the biggest dirtbag maneuver that a driver can do and it should mean a massive number of points on the license and an automatic 30 day suspension of driving privileges. This is how people get killed.

No.

Running a stop sign is that.

There is no way to express how all parents who heard about this feel for the the team (that includes the parents, the players, the guy who does their laundry. For everybody.).

In Finland you lose your license for running a stop sign. Here that sign is specifically put in intersections that demand attention. I could go on, and on about different driving cultures since I have some experience from a few but that trucker was making a living and assumed wrong while the buss driver assumed being right would mean he was okay.

I don't give a shit about the truck driver. He will be handled but the buss driver will never leave his home again.

It is a cruel world but I hope the buss driver receives the support he needs.

The bus driver is deceased.

There appear to be several issues with why the trucker missed seeing the STOP sign. He was heading west in the late afternoon, and this time of year, the sun could have been in his face. He was likely a stranger to the area, as any local trucker would have known there was a STOP there. Also, it may be a bit of a restricted vision corner, due to brush/trees on one corner, the SE corner which could have hidden both vehicles briefly. Not making excuses for an unforgivable error by the trucker, but stuff happens for a reason or two.

I lost an aunt and two cousins about 16 years ago in a similar accident in rural Alberta. Three of five in the SUV died, and the trucker was seriously hurt. My other aunt and cousin's wife were months in the hospital. My cousin driving just didn't stop for the new STOP sign, obviously was not paying proper attention. But no one really knows why to this day.

A horrific event

the driver of the bus was one of the few announced dead on scene, as you can see the whole front of the bus is torn open. the complete coaching staff, trainers, & play-by-play recorders were all seated in the front of the bus, along with the team Captain as well. all lost their lives at the scene unfortunately.

sorry for your loss tuco44

Thanks, yeg, it was long ago, and everyone has moved on. These types of road accidents happen all too often on the Cdn Prairies.

I can't open the links in the news like this, I have some mom issues with kids dying. I was not blaming the bus driver.

I've driven through Alberta once and your way of using stop signs in Canada is more European. My post was not an attempt to blame someone, I can't since I'm a human.

Cheers mate. For the record, your cops rule in NA and I like how most of Canada works on the roads. You, as us Finns have the best road safety officers no tax payers have to pay to: Mooses.

Yours are way, WAY bigger than ours.

On a serious note, I'm sorry you went through that, people die all the time but losing family never is easy.

I've driven through them at night, and I can tell you that they're not. The people who drive through those are absolutely epic.

Try talking with American truck drivers ad 2 am and you'll figure out the difference.

That's very tragic and sad and is going to be very painful for a long time for everyone.
There's going to be a very long investigation into what happened but from what I can see from the picture's is the truck was pulling two trailer's and the load of peat moss was very heavy so when the driver stopped at the stop sign and then proceeded through the intersection it took him a bit to get going. That's when the bus hit the back of the load. Ya it might be the truck drivers falt but I wouldn't start say he blew the stop sign.
He has enough to live with or maybe not... Just my thoughts.

yes you raise some good points, & yes it is too early to judge what will come of it. I DID hear however that the truck driver said "the sun was in his eyes" so he couldn't see the bus approaching, which would constitute that he did stop at the stop sign & just took too long to get going, just as you said.

only time will tell what will come of everything.
