Top speed electronic limit option..?

Unfortunately my M3 is limited to ~150-155mph/ 250kmh. I was reading the news on RS5 in the link below and this line caught my eye "the top speed is electronically governed to be only 155.34 mph, although they say that Audi can increase 173.98 mph, upon request.” "Do we have such an option? if not, why not? I know we can do it by modifying ECU but that voids the warranty...

As I understand, I believe there's a way to get rid of the governor thru the dealer, tho theres a waiver you will have to sign because basically, its intended for "offroad use" only. This waiver will of course, void your warranty.

Here in Switzerland, there is an option called M Driver's Package that, as I understand increases top speed to around ~270km/h among other things.

For about 800 bucks the Dinan chip will get rid of the speed governor and let you keep your warranty.

http://www.dinancars.com/store/produ...cat=818&page=1

I haven't done it but seems like a lot of bang for your buck.

....Powerchip ECU would take care of that. If you really wanted to you could just ask them to take off the governor and maybe get a better price.

You live in VA? May I ask where you plan to exceed 155?

Tuning with ANYONE, including Dinan, voids the powertrain warranty. Dinan, separately, offers a warranty on its stuff (as most companies do), but that warranty isn't through BMW. Basically, if the engine goes "boom," then it will be up to you to get Dinan to pay for it. Anyone who says differently is lying through their teeth - I've had it with vendors promising that THEIR product won't void warranty. B.S. I've also had it with vendors promising THEIR product is totally undetectable. Again, B.S. Most of the time, these claims go together. Here's a question - if it doesn't void warranty, why does it need to be undetectable?

The only difference is that some BMW dealers offer and warranty Dinan parts. I may be wrong, but I have always thought of Dinan as BMW's official tuner going way back. I am not saying they are better or worse than other tuners out there. They do tend to be more expensive than other tuners.

All I know is I could go up to my local BMW dealer today and order a Dinan tune or exhaust.

That's ancient history; not the case anymore. Just ask for that in writing .

BMW typically underestimates performance items, especially 0-60 times. Most of the major mags have the top speed listed as a confirmed 161 mph (260kph).

The better question to ask is why the heck do you want to go above 155 (or 161) mph????

161, not 155. Has nothing to do with speedo error. Electronically limited at 161. Your speedo will read closer to 170 due to built in speedo error. Been documented in several magazine tests, I've seen it in some BMW literature (can't remember where exactly), and it has been done and seen by many on this and other forums, including me. Confirmed by GPS. Sorry, I didn't take a picture, I had both hands on the wheel.

I'm hoping to hit the limiter in a couple of weeks at a Texas World Speedway DE. We use the long part of an oval track as one of the straits on a road course. I managed to hit 135 in my Audi TT and have been as fast as 165 (as a passenger) in a 911 Turbo.

Wish me luck

I had the car way past that in Germany. I wonder if the dealer reprogrammed the car once it got back here...

I just did some research, and turns out speed is limited to 250 kmh on regular cars, and to 275 kmh on M cars. And that's indicated, which is the only way the car measures speed. That translates to 155 indicated on regular cars, and 171 on M cars. Those figures seem to be confirmed by your tests. Man, that's a lot faster than anybody should travel on public roads. Take care.

you can go beyond 155 on the dct by not engaging 7th gear. i've gone to 170 on the speedo in 6th only to shift to 7th to be cut off...
