Nasty paint chip repair
So I'm about to begin my summer detail and was debating the best course of action on this nasty little chip. It's about a quarter of an inch in size and still chipping/lifting in the lower right corner. I plan to carefully remove that and then fill the chip.
Still debating whether to treat it like a normal stone chip, ie fill with touch up, clear, and level but I'm concerned it will look awful given how large it is. I also have some leftover oem paint in a spray can so I was contemplating taping off the surrounding area and spraying the chip to give a more level finish. Is this a bad idea? Anyone successfully repair a chip this large before? Any advise is appreciated thx

Haha, indeed I did. Way back when I owned, and loved, a cream yellow '95 850 T-5R. My first few cars were Volvos. Before BMW, I was a turbo brick guy. Apparently the Swedes refer to the T-5R as the "T-gul" but I suppose you would know better than I. Just always loved that moniker. Thx

Hey, thats what I thought. Yep this one was called T-yellow. Special car back then. If my memory serves me right the R had a number of additional HP' compared to the standard T5, 250 vs 300 ish..?
Was also a bit of a turbo man - obviously with both Volvo and Saab pretty much introducing turbos to standard mass produces family cars - so enjoyed a few of those over the years. Than one day I decided to try a Bimmer for company car, since then hooked... |

IIRC the 850 T5 was like 220HP and the T-5R was 240HP. In 96 and 97 they changed the name to just 850R and they had 250HP, though they dropped the cream yellow paint. At least that's what we got over here in the States. I believe you guys got the 5 speed whereas we only got the 4 speed auto.
I modded mine a tiny bit and probably had it up to 275HP or so. Insane amount of HP for a fwd car. It had that old school turbo torque with huge delay and when the boost kicked in the front tires just went all over the place. Similarly when I drove a BMW and discovered how great the virtue of a balanced drivetrain/chassis was, my Volvo days were over. Still lust after a V8 swapped Volvo though. Came close to picking up a 5.0L V8 780 a few years back, wish I nabbed it.

Went ahead and masked off the surrounding area and sprayed it with my rattle can, put some clear over that and then leveled it the next day. Came about about as well as it could have. Pretty happy given how bad it was.

I sanded the chip, cleaned it off. Used touch up paint from factory. Then use the blob remover from the kit I bought. Self leveling and came out great! As if the chip was never there!
