Engine Ticking sound, what is it????

Hey guys I just did my rod bearings yesterday with BE bearings and I switched from Liquid Moly 10w-60 to Red Line 5W-50 to test it out because I hear Liquid Moly isn’t really the “best” oil and I heard good things about Red Line and it’s also a little thinner. I do happen to hear a ticking sound coming from the engine bay, I’ve never heard it before but maybe I just didn’t pay attention to it because I’m paranoid? But liquid moly did make my engine “knock” a little like everybody else usually runs into with that oil. I’ve attached a video you can watch & hear where the sound is coming from.

Lots of people say this sound is nornal and this is just how the engines are and it sometimes just goes away, but I would love to heard your guy’s ideas on it, is it normal? Is it related to something? Should I not be concerned etc. There is no loud “knocking” types of noises either. Would love to hear what you guys have to say. Thank you

Sounds like completely normal valve ticking in my ears mate.
Ps. I'd definitely stay with 10w60 oil specially after increasing bearing clearance.

Thank you! Should I change my oil right now back to 10w-60 then? I’ve maybe driven with the red line 5w-50 for 20 miles. I’m just a paranoid guy haha

I bought it with 55k and now I’m at 58k. Wasn’t making the ticking noise until I did the RB’s and changing to a thinner oil, I’m guessing it could be because of the thinner oil and not using the 10w-60?

Mate . Your ticking noise is just normal for our S65/85 engines (Rod-Knock = RIP)!
The ticking noise comes from the valve train , It's the typical sewing machine noise .

As for your next oil change , you should use the 10W-60 BMW ///M Twin Power Turbo oil .
This motor oil has been specially developed for our BMW ///M engines .
The 10W-60 is thicker oil and will also dampen the S65 ticking noise (noise dampening)!

Agree that the bmw 10w60 is a quiter oil for the s65. I personally run Redline 5w50 and get really excellent performance out of it, A+ oil reports with 7-8k supercharged intervals.

Not sure I agree that the bmw 10w60 is the best option just because bmw makes it. They also make the stock rod bearings……(or have someone make them to their specs)

You notice the engine noises to be louder with Redline 5w-50?

I replaced the engine mounts, I’m just talking about the ticking in the engine shown in the video.

I have a hulking mass in the form of the Harrop supercharger sitting atop my engine which dampens a lot of the s65 ticks from the cabin but hood up and standing in front, it sounds like your video.

I had the rod bearings replaced several months ago and the performance shop that did it replaced the engine oil with Redline 5W50 grade. Car is running beautifully and I don’t hear any unexpected sounds from the engine bay (compared to before the RB swap). But maybe my hearing is just going bad!

Awesome yea I guess it is t an issue I just picked up another black m3 today and it does have the same noise so it isnt an issue, seems to be the thicker the oil the more it does dampen the noise tho, thank you

Normal. Use Motul 10w-60 oil. It's good and gives me good blackstone reports after heavy track days , where engine rpm's don't drop under 5000.
EDIT: Don't drop under 5000 for a long time, they would drop when I shift , doh.
