Invitation-only Buy-back event?
hey guys, I just got an email from a BWM dealership which services my car, offering to buy back my car at top dollar prices
I know its a gimmick to get you to come in and get a new car, but what do dealers use to appraise your car? Its a 2008 E90 M3 with 61k, CPO until 11/13 or 100k miles with maintenance package as well. Fully loaded with all options except 19" rims. What do you think?

I also got one. If your car isnt close to paid off you will be absorbing a lot of "negative equity".

I'm not sure it should really matter how the appraise it, but it will likely be based on auction prices. Which for an 08 with 61k miles will probably be 35k or.
So the real question you should be asking is do you want a new car since I'm sure the deal they give you on your current car won't be that special. |

I recently bough a used '10 M3 from a local dealer. Less than 2 weeks later I got a letter in the mail asking if I was interested in selling it back to them because they like to have cars like mine around. They just send out generic letters like these to all the customers in their database. I've gotten really elaborate ones from the local Mercedes dealer before. They have fake post it notes attached to them and are email formats with complete conversasions. Trying to make it look like they are talking specifically about my car. It was hilarious.

yah if it's actually a well put together event then it's worth it just to check it out without selling back your car.
I've gotten invites to "private" vendor events before and my first reaction is that it's just some kind of gimmick/scam but sometimes i'm pleasantly surprised |

I sold cars before... it's a gimmick. They just want you to come through the door.

I haven't received one of these from BMW yet, but I received one for my 2003 S2000 about 2 years after purchasing the car. It seems rather standard.

Every dealer is up to this tactic, just got 1 from Chevrolet asking to buy back my 07' Tahoe for 12k. They must think everyone is a sucker

It's a normal sales tactic near the end of the year IMHO for some dealers (not all) to improve there year end bottom line.
Great time to make a good deal ... Near the end of the year as well as month ends.

Gimmick!
Expect the usual low ball offer and something like the following: "What if I can get you into (insert model here) for the same monthly payment? Would you take the new car home today?"

I wish Ford would offer to buy back my 88 Mustang at top dollar prices. Still waiting for the invite.
Last time I was at the BMW dealer asking a question about my newly acquired M3 the salesman told me it was the end of the month and they were trying to move cars and didn't have time to waste as I had already purchased the car (from a private seller). While it's certainly true I expected more from a BMW dealer. Guess they're all the same in the end with the gimmicks and bullshit. |

Anyone thinking of selling or trading a car should get a quote from Carmax. It's quick and easy. 2 bids are always better than one.

+1, wish I would have done that! When I sold my last car, I was in a pinch and willing to sell it for very little money to avoid having two car payments concurrently (out of principle, stupid, I know). In hind site, I think I probably could have gotten more money from them than I did selling it to a good friend. I wouldn't have had the guilt of something going wrong effecting the friendship, either. Luckily nothing too serious has happened, and I hope it wouldn't have effected things, but I probably would have felt bad/guilty anyway.
