First track day with the M3, need some help
Hi all,
I got my first day on track with the M3, and it was not too bad... Car can boogie, but I was let down by my tires and brakes.. I swapped the stock pads with Hawk HP plus before the track day. Man, the trains are quieter than that. Can anyone recommend a set of quiet pads that work on track well? I read a lot of good things about Ferodo DS2500 or such, but can't seem to find them? My rotors are in decent shape, but not new, they have minimal lip still. A guy on the track with a corvette was running EBC Yellow and he said they were quiet in the 120 miles he drove thus far on track and street combined, and did not fade in the 20 min session we had... Many thanks for any input. |

There is no quiet race pad. There is no hybrid pad, as it will compromise on something. Best is to have a dedicated track pad and a street pad. Plenty of options that route.

OP I run Cobalt Friction pads, their XR2 compound, and they are "quiet". There's a little noise when I first stab them but other than that they are pretty silent. There is a bit of noise when coming to a slow stop, but only when they are cold. I've driven to the track with them and it wasn't bad, but they do make some noise. |

Ok, so what is a decent track pad which does not squeal like a train on track? I can live with dedicated track pads... I mean I can switch them in 30 min.
For street I already have a new set of OEM's ( I think they are Textar branded though). |

Squealing is not always caused by the compound. Make sure you have properly bedded them, are keeping heat in them, and have anti-squeal on the backing plates. Some calipers just tend to make more noise by design, but you should not get garbage truck sounds at every corner. The MOT "miss" is one of the biggest causes of noise on the track. If you can't keep the pad inside its adhesive friction range, it will be in abrasive friction and make a lot of noise -- and chew up rotors. What tire are you on, what other mods does the car have, and what's your skill level like? You may need to go down to a slightly less aggressive compound.

DS2500 is reasonably quiet. Squeaks only occasionally.
Ds.uno is the real deal but noisy as all track pads are. Ive got barely used 2500's and ds uno's for oem calipers sitting on my shelf if you want a good deal on them. (Switched to bbk pretty quickly so they got used for a day each) |

They do? I'd say squealing is the exception, not the rule. When I'm watching cars lapping at a DE, race, time attack, or whatever, I don't hear constant screeching in every braking zone from every car. I think people just accept that "race cars make weird noise" but that doesn't have to be true. Hawk DTC-70 and 60 have been nearly dead silent for me on track. They have a slight squeak at low speed when cold, but that's it. I keep them at the correct operating temps front and rear, FWIW.

thanks all! I'll just put back my stock ones for now, and get the Ferodo's from leftfootbr8king and try them out..
If anyone wants a set of one set of front hawks hp plus for free, come and grab them.. I won't use them anymore. (used for just bed in process, drive to track, and 2x 20 min sessions - the cancelled us for the last session due to the storm in MA last night ) Cheers |

I run DTC-60s, they do squeal a bit driving to/from the track with light braking but on the track they're pretty quiet. Plus the big thing is that at least for my E46 they have lifetime warranty through FCP. Not sure if they stock it for E9X as well but definitely worth it if they do

I'd give Hawk DTC-60 a try. Cheap, readily available, and consistent performance.
Zeckhausen Racing always keeps a healthy quantity in stock.
