First track build (e92 M3)

I am really happy I had the front done, reinforced strut tower tops and bars from the cage tied into the strut towers.

Because the build has taken so much longer then planned, my enthusiasm kept increasing and I kept buying more things to add to the build. I recently bought a CF driveshaft, Bimmerworld Headers and X pipe, all new wheel bearings and hubs and am having my CV joints REM polished. I also ordered some Flossman aero parts and CF trunk out of Germany, which are in transit now. SPL also recently released their Thrust Arms and I had all of their other bars so decided to get those too since it should help to dial in more positive caster. Hope to be able to post up pics with a lot more fun stuff in a couple weeks.

What did you decide on aero? I saw you mentioned Flossman.

I also just bought a toy hauler with full living quarters that is capable of hauling the car so definetely plan to travel a bit. The bummer is that I have to remove the car to sleep in it but it was hard finding a trailer built stout enough to handle a car that also has living quarters so options were few.

I decide to do the GT4S parts, which have more downforce then the standard GT4 but less then the GT3 or ALMS widebody kits. I am getting the front brake ducted splitter with under tray and canards, the swan neck/DTM style wing and the trunk. They were really pushing this set if I was going to run the car in stock width, but of course we're trying to sell the widebody. It is definetely less aggressive then going the APR route which is popular here with E92's. Hope I don't regret it but they seemed knowledgable and said it would provide a good balance.

hmm---you gotta kick the car out huh? I have found that at places like Laguna Seca, you can get CRAZY amounts of dew on a car left outside overnight. My car does not have windows, so I would not want all that moisture in my car. If you don't have windows, I guess you'll be needing a cover.....not that big a deal.

How wide is your rear wing? Is is that low trunk mounted wing I see on the [not in English] Flossman website?

(fwiw, I've had great luck with the APR wing and splitter. it would interest me to chassis mount the wing someday, but I'm in no hurry there.....)

This is the one I went with, it is on the small side, 140cm wide.

I am having lexan Windows made that will work for flatbed towing and to seal the car up from the elements. Would be nice to have a trailer with living quarters and separate garage to house the car. Would have required a medium duty hauler, which I was not prepared to do.

upgrading heat shield on the firewall. With the car gutted, I figured I would put as much of this as I can in any spot that will radiate heat. Plan to do the trans tunnel, floorboards under the seat area, fuel tank and trunk panels above exhaust.

the rear of your cage ties into the rear subframe, right? can you shoot a few more pics of that when you get a chance? also, are you going to be running a true rear coilover?

i'm asking because i'm contemplating running a true rear coilover with a 1/2 cage (harness bar) integrated into the rear strut towers with subframe reinforcement. i'm trying to kinda gauge how much of the trunk its going to take up.

Yes, the rear of the cage ties into the subframe in 4 points, 2 in front of the subframe and 2 in the rear. Not sure if this picture helps any more than the others? I think there is some flexibility on how you design the tie in points if you have a certain space/design consideration in mind. You can see that the end of the cage is just ahead of where the plastic trunk floor panel bolts in to give you an idea how far back the bars would be in the trunk area. If you want a more specific picture, let me know and I can ask the fabricator to take another pic.

thanks, that helps. it doesn't look like its too far back and i'll still be able to get all my track crap in there. i think it could even be constructed to accommodate a few tires where the rear seat would be.

This is Epic!!!!! Shit I'm happy for you, good luck with this. Makes me want to tear mine apart and fully build her...but after driving a Cayman gt4, I'm going to say..I'm stuck.

GT4 is a great car. To turn one into a dedicated track car would be pretty expensive, especially given the prices they are currently going for. My goal is to be competitive with the P cars whether Cayman or 911, hopefully my goal is realistic.

Your goal is definitely possible. M3 balance is much better than 911 and motor is better than the caymans. Don't worry you will be good out there.

Balance is good in the e92, but drive a Cayman ..the GT4 is classified a scalpel for a reason. Sharpest and tightest and lightest car I've ever driven close to the limit on a track in stock form. Porsche over engineers the cars for a reason..because they are true track cars built for the street unlike BMW. The 3.8 Carrera S motor is the most reliable motor even more than our S65's. I love my e92 but after going 8/10's in my clients GT4 at Limerock ...I'm sorry but Porsche is calling me. Not saying I'd do a fully built GT4 race car build, just specifying they are worth the $100k for what they offer to enjoy on track and off.
