Michelin Pilot Sport or DCT? - traction issue

Not sure if its the Sport+ power, Sport steering, MDM traction, S5, 7C degrees + pouring rain or the Michelin Pilot Sport.

But my god did I nearly loose the car tonight on a flat, straight dual carriageway!
Happened the night I picked her up and thought it might be tyre pressure,
checked next morning. It was a little low so pumped it to the correct spec.

Gave it another boot full in second gear and nearly lost it
(first time I ever experienced anything as scary and as close as that)
all these years I've been driving.

I had a manual M3 before and gave it boot full all the time
in any temp or weather and the Toyo T1R Sport held up just fine
Previous Falken FK453 tyres even had plenty of traction in 0C degree temps.

But these Michelin are either crap in cold wet weather or
the DCT is too powerful and quick and breaks traction all the time.

I'm still in shock by what happened tonight….

First time in my 2nd M3 that I ever felt like its an animal and it wanted to spit me off the road.

Not sure if it was skill or some pure luck that I caught the skid.
I've definitely learnt from that and no wonder there are so many
Cat C/Ds on auto trader. Always wondered why!

Cause I felt quite invincible before in my M3.
Not sure what the hell is wrong with this one but I will definitely
be more careful with it from now on.

Lesson learnt.

It's the falling temperatures. Summer rubber compounds just don't grip well if the pavement is cold. In the past few weeks, I've noticed the DSC intervening more and more in simple turns, and even between shifts in S5 mode. I have the PSS too.

Best thing to do is start slowing down as the weather gets colder.

Maybe DCT shifted gears too fast, chirped the rears and broke traction on a slightly oily wet road...? I doubt it's the tyres, I have pilot super sports, 275 on the back on competition wheels and they're best tyres I've ever had.

Hi guys.

Thing is, mine is Pilot Sport not the Super Sport?

All I can assume is that Pilot Sport, mixed with rain
and cold weather + DCT fast shifts equals disaster.

Never had such a close scary moment before in my life.

Renewed take on the M3 after tonight.
Use to just thrash it everywhere and it felt like it was on rails.

Now it was off the rails. <-- literally!!

I've driven the PS2 on cold tires in some melted snow, and it was definitely a frightening experience. I highly suggest that you stay away from driving when the temperature falls that low with summer tires, it's just not worth it. But at the same time, if you are careful and don't go WOT in the conditions that you stated then you'll be fine

I'm definitely definitely not going full WOT under those circumstances again.
That was the closest yet and frightening experience.

Glad but not glad that you guys recommend or have similar experience.

Just caught me by surprise cause previous experience with different tyres and
conditions never threw me out like that before.

The PS2s have a very quick breakaway. I would suggest a move to the PSSs at your next tyre change its about the best street tyre for the M3, with more traction, a very smooth and controllable breakaway as well as having better grip at lower temps (than the PS2). You can run PS2 on the front and PSS on the rear if you fronts are worn out first - I had that combo for a year and it was fine.
I wouldn't recommend MDM in wet conditions or low temps either - combine that with a high drivelogic mode such as S4/5 is definitely living dangerously (S2 is the best when there is low grip).

Both PS2 and PSS are summer tires that will be very slippery if it gets cold where you are. Now the time to switch to all seasons ( or winter radials where I am ).

Yup I was in MDM.
Never experienced these tires before in these conditions.
But have been driving the M3 around everywhere with the Toyo before.

That never broke away traction like the Pilot Sport.

Definitely will be going careful with these tires and glad its not just me
that had issue with the tires or weather condition.

They're crap in cold wet. Don't push it and probably a good idea to not even use MDM. If your temps will be below 50F (10C) for most of the winter, consider getting performance winter tires.

No matter how hard I try, mdm never let's me have any fun even in the rain, dsc off is the only way to play. I have no idea how you managed to get out of shape.

Have you ever taken any performance driving schools? Is this your first rwd car?

DCT has shorter gearing than the 6-speed that your use to, so there is more torque available to overwhelm the tires. outdated PS2s would play a factor too.

His location is UK so he has Euro MDM which lets you slide quite some before it completely shuts you down.

I had a 335i 2006 manual before, and 11 months with a manual E92 M3 and just picked
up my DCT 2010 M3. So i'd say I'm pretty use to the power.

I did floor my M3 quite a bit before hence it took me by surprise.

The MDM hardly kicked in at all even though I was going mental behind the wheel trying to save the slide.

Everything turned max, 7C, pouring rain, DCT S5 8000rpm second gear into 3rd
caused it I think.

Never again! (I'll try at least )
