Widest tire for the OEM 18" style 219M?

What's the widest tire recommended for the OEM 18" 219M wheels?

Been thinking about getting a set of 18" Volk TE37/G25 but haven't seen a set in the right color for the right price.

Thinking about just grabbing a cheap set of OEM 18" 219M instead (I know it doesn't make a lot of sense, but part of the reason I want TE37s is the road here sucks and I want to put thicker tires and smaller wheels on the car)

From what I've seen here, you can safely widen by 20mm on front and rear. It will of course reduce wet traction and make the steering less responsive.

So that's like....putting 265 for the front and 285 for the rear...?

I think maybe 245/40 and 265/40 setup is probably still the best all around for these wheels...since a lot of tires doesn't come with 255/40 and 275/40. (A lot of the roads here in Houston are really bad, lol)

Thanks for the info on 20mm

I would stick with stock. BMW tests that stuff extensively.

But verify with your tire shop before ordering anything. Some tires tend to run wide for their size (due to different sidewall designs).

I don't understand why you upsize in tires other than aesthetics? There are so many more negatives than positives that come out from doing so.
(-)
  • less steering response
  • less MPG
  • increase weight of the wheel
  • decrease in wet performance
  • increase in cost
  • makes the car seem heavier

(+)
  • looks cool
  • greater traction off the line, but unless you are supercharged, you will barely notice any difference

Pretty much everything (except for cost) on your minuses list is imperceptible. The increase in traction on your positive list, however, is not.

With that said, I would not go more than 255/275 on the OEM 18s.
