I think that with time and mileage on S65 timing chain stretches ,plastic chain guides wear out ,hydraulic tensioners do not hold pressure(bleed out)and that combined makes rattle and clank on cold startup.Tensioners are easiest to replace(may not fix noise),chain and guides are project.

Don't be worried by the noise . Otherwise 60/70 % of the S65 engines would be already blown up .
Our S65 bearings that's our spooky nightmare => https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=786615

Yep, I put in BE bearings at 96K ... but now I'm paranoid it will blow up after almost $3K in preventative RB work!

But I do wish I knew exactly what is causing it so at least I knew... would be one less thing to worry about even though it's a total champ on the road thus far.

Negative . I heard it already from day one . BMW says it's normal like usual . Same with our bearing ticking noises ...But that really worries me and can blown our engines !

If you changed your bearings with BE . You're just fine and you should enjoy your car .

I know I know.. but the chain rattle is just scary to me sometimes. Most wouldn't notice it unless they are obsessed like people here, but I do and it's so damn odd. I cringe when I hear it as if my baby is getting hurt.

finally got a video of what mine does occasionally. This was leaving the office, I had driven it around 1pm, left around 5pm when the noise happened. it also happened at 1pm but I didn't get a video. it's only after sitting for a few hours, but not always. Hot day. Oil is full... Also have the cowbell noise with driveshaft, not sure if that's related but doubt it.

Mine isnt nearly that bad. Cowbell noise is solved by replacing the driveshaft guibo I heard.

I should have added... that's on a scale of 1-10, a 9 in terms of the worst I've heard on my car.. usually it's much less. sometimes it's perfect...

Only time its rarely happened is after adding ceratec. It did it maybe 3x during those 5000 miles. Definitely going to get it again.

Still no word from anyone on whether or not this is an issue? I still can't get an answer from anyone... I've asked a lot.

My last e90m3 had a cold start rattle at 69k miles. I daily drove that car, and it happened every morning. I bought 2 new timing chain tensioners, but never got around to installing before the car was totalled.

My car did that once on the first start after I'd changed my own rod bearings, as you can imagine I about shat myself. It's definitely at external motor noise, my thought was something to do with the belt/tensioner since I had just put it back on

You think if I take it into my Indy they will be able to diagnose without hearing it in person? I don't know what to do... it doesn't do it on demand and I just don't know enough about this motor to be able to direct anyone to a potential cause.
