Nope, but I do still appreciate the S54. It's a great engine...….once the rod bearing recall has been done....and the entire cooling system has been replaced.

Two different beast, the E46 M3 engine should stay in the E46 M3.

The only thing e46 was better at was the rawness of the driving experience but engine was no way

Had a few S54 cars. Have S65 now. Love the S54 but a big nope to the OPís question.
Besides not weighing much more and poorer gas mileage the S65>S54 in all regards, imo. S65 makes music on both the intake and exhaust side while the E46 only sounds good on the induction side, again, imo.

This. The rasp (which some people don't like) was magical, I don't know any other car that does it.

It's a different beast though, more go-karty/raw/sporty whereas the e9x is more refined/luxurious.

Having had both, I'd stick with e9x. I've had much much less maintenance problems, and I'm glad to never have to do a valve adjustment ever again. Or think about Vanos. Or subframe.

Not by a mile but the E46 chassis is sublime and a lot more communicative.

I do miss the rasp and rawness of the car but the S65 is light years better.
Sure the torque was slightly better on the S54, but not by far.

Lmao, not even close.

Why anyone would is absolutely unfathomable. There's nothing explicitly better about the S54 (less reliable in multiple ways, less performance, weighs more, sound isn't even in the same league).

The only reason anyone would prefer the S54 is if they have an obsession with the E46 M3 and the nostalgia associated with it.

And the S54 having better torque figures/powerband than the S65 is misinformation as well.

These two charts seem to be from the BMW press release documents.

E46 M3 http://www.automobile-sportive.com/g...powergraph.jpg

E92 M3 http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog....e_curve450.jpg

It actually looks like the E92's engine is making more torque at every RPM zone. At 2000 RPM, the E46 is at 290 Nm and the E92 is at 330 Nm. The curve also seems flatter for the E92.

They both start around 260 Nm at 1000 RPM. The E46 hits the peak at 4500 and the E92 at 3500, the E92 also has less dramatic of a drop off after peak to it's lowest tq output at redline vs the E46.

This means that the E92's engine is making more torque everywhere, and peaking lower yet remaining steadier longer. So, there's really no merit to this claim of the E9X not being torquey enough then vs. the E46 - it's superior everywhere in the revband while having to pull less lbs/tq:

The E46 M3 moves 13.2 lbs of weight per lb-ft of torque whereas the E92 M3 moves slightly less: 12.3. The E46 should be even slower to drive. That's for both manual transmission equipped cars based on Car and Driver figures.

S54 = overrated.

Currently have both.

And they are different ďtoolsĒ

My e46 with S2 suspension handles very nice compared to the stock e90. E46 m3 is a back road ripper.

The e90 is a highway, or interstate car. Depends on the mood. If you wanna be flashy take the e90 out. If you want to have fun at the beach, and be retro take the e46.

Your comparing the best two naturally aspirated engines BMW has ever released. So itís a good choice of discussion.

Had a Z4M for about 5 years. The S54 is a great high piston speed engine but I much prefer the S65 for every reason and use case.

S65 actually weighs less than the iron block s54.

If everyone is going to mention torque. Why not throw the s62 into the mix. Which has the low end torque everyone craves.

E90 M3 with S65 is closer than many think to the E39 M5 with S62 in terms of torque due to the 10% lighter weight that improves torque to weight ratio and 20% shorter diff that multiplies the S65 torque better.

S54 makes more torque at every rpm range.
Never understood that logic, they are both high strung motors that make peak hp at high rpm.

Owned both as well. The S54 was great while it lasted, still a favorite of mine and like many said the last of the platforms to retain the raw race car feel. I have to choose the S65 simply because the sound and substantially increased power without sacrificing weight. That said all are great, all M's are special
