R888R or MPS4s? Or something else?

Hey all - I should be getting my AG 19x10 19x11 359m reps in shortly and I'm looking to buy some tires. This is not my daily and gets driven 2-3 times a week max, and usually only for a morning spirited drive on the weekends. I do however plan to do a couple of track days annually on this wheel/tire setup. If I get hooked, I'll go for a set of 18's. I've always had MPS and eventually MPS4s on all my M cars but in this case, since this car isn't my daily and I do plan on the occasional track day, I'm wondering if I can get away with something a bit more aggressive. I plan on the following sizes - (F)275 30 R19 and (R)295 30 R19.

Which tire would be the best given my use case, the R88R or the MPS4s? Or is there another tire I should consider? Can't seem to find Cup2's in these sizes. I like the Yoko AD08R but it's a bit pricier.

So which tire would you guys get and am I missing a contender in this category?

Avoid the R888R. Only good for a straight line and looking cool. Extremely noisy and they suck on track (from experience).

I would fork up the extra dough for the AD08R
It’s 200TW and a better streetable track tire

Not many options in that tire size ( I run the same sizes) . Unfortunately you will need to determine what works better for you. The PS4S will be a better street tire, while the AD08R is a better track tire. Both are very expensive tires .

Ideally, you would want a 18" track wheel/tire as that provides much better options and pricing.

Thanks for the input gents. Leaning towards the mps4s for this set of 19's, then going for a track set of 18's.

since you only drive the car rarely id go with the R compounds. Just wrapped my ZCP wheels in R888R and they are a lot quieter than when I had them on 18s. They do great on track especially compared to a street tire.

That being said the PS4s will work for your needs and will even work on the track. Just depends how extreme you want to go. Ones an R compound and ones a street tires

I'm a long time AD08R supporter which I currently daily on my M3. Recently I've been pointed to the Dunlop Direzza Z3. Better grip than AD08R, better in the wet, and longer lasting. I will be trying these next.

I'm curious about proper sizing as well; My AG 359m reps are 19x10(f) and 19x11(r) I know sizes are limited; I wanted to go 295 30 19 in the back which I believe is available) and 275 30 19 in the front but I don't think they make that size. Not sure what I'd do for the front.

Depending on use, a great performance tire I recently used was the Hankook RS4. Even dealt with rain pretty well.

There are more than a couple of things to always keep in mind when plus sizing up from the OEM tire sizes and making this kind of investment. Two major ones are 1) Preserving the OEM load and speed ratings (or exceeding them) to maintain load carrying capability. 2) Preserving the OEM outer tire diameters to maintain gearing and roll-center locations in space. There are more such as cost, availability, and section width relationship to rim width and lastly “will they new sizes even fit under the fenders.. Anyway, let’s take a look at the main considerations to always keep in mind:

OEM Size Data:
Fronts = 245/35ZR19 (93Y) XL with Outer Diameter = 25.9 inches
Rears = 265/35ZR19 (98Y) XL with Outer Diameter = 26.3 inches

Your New Wheels = 10 in wide fronts and 11 inches wide rears

General rule to preserve handling (except for racing slicks) is the rim width should be at least 90% as wide as the tire section width (or more for racing applications). Think of the rim as being the ‘foundation of the house’ i.e. a narrower tire section width on a wider rim creates a trapezoidal shape and is much more laterally stable under cornering loads at iso inflation pressures than a wide tire on a narrow rim. Doing that math we get:

Fronts - (10in X 25.4mm/in) / 0.9 = 282mm - Dropping down to a 275mm section on the 10.0 inch wide rim should work well.

Rears - (11in X 25.4mm/in) / 0.9 = 310mm - Dropping down to a 305mm section on the 11.0 inch wide rear OR a 295mm section should work well. However a 305mm section on an E9X M3 in the rear needs at a least a 33mm offset to fit reasonably well at stock ride height.

Since you mentioned more weekend spirited driving for weekends, I can recommend the Michelin PS4S which will also work well and survive a couple of track HPDE events providing the hot pressures and tire temperatures are managed properly.

Recommendation:
Fronts = 275/30ZR19 (96Y) XL Michelin Pilot Sport 4S - Outer Diameter = 25.6 in
Rears = 305/30ZR19 (102Y) XL Michelin Pilot Sport 4S - Outer Diameter = 26.3in
Alternate Rear = 295/30ZR19 (100Y) XL Michelin PS4S - Outer Diameter = 26.0in

Just my two cents. I hope this helps you with your decision. Yes, I know there will be alternative point of views and perspectives but this is just one man's point of view.

I have had every tire multiple times and unless it's a dedicated track set up I now buy Conti extreme contact sport. Same performance as PS4S and cheaper.

Triple 8s are a joke on the road, unless you are supercharged and making monster power having triple 8s serves no benefit to you on the public roads. PS4S is a great tire for all-around duty and occasional weekend track days, but if you are looking for something to push on the streets and on the track I would consider something like AD08R or RS4s.

Ive been daily driving R888Rs for about 5 years or more (whenever the Rs came out) and they are 100000% streetable.

The only real issue is noise and even that is not so bad a on a large diameter wheel (19/20). They work fine in the rain with tread too just have to be careful.

Only real issue I had was I had a work meeting and my Prius was unavailable and it was torrential downpour. I took my M4 with BALD R888R and that was terrifying sliding everywhere. But I live in Socal so we get rain very rarely and when we do I have tread on my tires, so its fine.

OP don't listen to people who are so dramatic when they describe tires that aren't slicks. I daily drive R888r and they are a great tire that will serve you well. If your intentions are to have your ride be semi supple and still fun go with the PS4s. If you want R compound level grip and don't drive in the rain every month get the Toyos.

My other car is a gt3rs on Cup2 and I really believe the R888r are more street and wet friendly than those michelins. You honestly won't regret either decision just remember the cons of the r888r: loud, quick wear rate, less wet performance.

+1 well put.

Best would be 275/30 and 295/30 in terms of feel and performance. 305 on the back of a car with 200ftlbs of torque is unnecessary. Try to keep the 20mm staggered between front and rear to limit understeer. These cars actually feel great squared so anything that brings a bigger discrepancy to the staggered is a no no
