Talking Camaro Z28 production plans approved. Will compete head to head with Mustang GT500

saw this bit of news on Camaro5.com just before.

Quote:
GM’s Camaro Z28 plans are back on and the top-end Camaro version is set for production, according to Ed Welburn, GM’s VP for global design! The modified Z28 body is already completed, but the powertrain still requires calibration work. The tentative timetable is that the Z28 will not be available until the latter half of 2011.

The Z28 will be powered by the 550+ hp 6.2L supercharged V8 LSA engine currently in use in the Cadillac CTS-V. The Camaro Z28 special body will include a raised hood to fit the supercharger underneath, and there will be a tall rear spoiler. -- http://www.camaro5.com/?p=2318
Any american muscle fans here? What would you pick - GT500 or Camaro Z28? I think its pretty exciting news to have a Mustang GT500 direct competitor. I've always enjoyed being a sideline observer of the muscle car wars between the Stang and the Camaro.

Can't wait to see this version of the Camaro.

Of course, the supposed 2011 Mustang GT with a 5.0 shoudl be plenty exciting, too.

I think what they call it was poorly planned out. The z/28 had a 302 while the SS was the most powerful (well besides the Nickey, COPO and Yenko) but those were modification packages available. The z/28 shouldn't be the most powerful in this case... it should be RS/z/28 and then SS...

Call me a nit pick but heritage plays a large part in why the Camaro is special, if they can bring back the retro styling how about they bring back the way things were done too.

Oh noes you're the guy with the LSX 69 with big brakes and all of that, that got burned to the ground after the upper level of your garage fell on it in a fire...

I was going to let you give that car to me for free too.

The original Z28 (1st generation) was a road racing option though. It wasn't as fast on the street as the SS, but was much more track oriented. They've flip-flopped the two models a couple of times over the years.

Hope the Z28 has the suspension tunings more like the G8 GT and GXP. GM in order to keep the Camaro's cost down did cheap out on the suspension of the regular and SS.

Maybe after mods. This is the LSA from the CTS-V they're using (560Hp) not the LS9 (640Hp).

Epic, the aussies should easily make a better car than the GT500.

Question

Shoot. I didn't even click the link.

Why wouldn't they use the LS9? Seems like a perfectly good engine to throw into the SS.

Actually, the Camaro was bucking the trend. In the Chevy lineup, the "Z" model usually is the top sport model. The Corvette is the most obvious example (Z06, now ZR1). And as for the '10 model year, it looks like that the Corvette w/the Z51 suspension has been renamed to "Corvette SS".

There are other examples too .. (Cavalier Z24, Beretta Z26, Lumina Z34 where all the top sport model in their respective lineups).
