Tesla interior is the exactly opposite of the definition of pedestrian.
It's unique, striking, highly ergonomic and innovative.

In the exterior, form follows function, but still conforms to the clean and minimalist style. I love it more and more.

Yep, and Tesla has it in spades over BMW these days.
Sadly.

To each his own.
I look at both, side-by-side in my garage, every morning (unless my wife already snagged the Tesla). At least for now.

BMW M3 exterior is more nuanced vs. clean TM3 lines, and I do still love my Sakhir Orange color choice.
Once I touch the door handle, however, it's Tesla. No contest.
From no key required, to features, to tech, to ergonomics, to sound quality, to performance, to driver engagement.

It's what BMW ///M3's are supposed to make you feel, but have utterly failed to keep up.

BMW has to do something to differentiate itself from the crowd.
I'm not sure it can.

It can't differentiate on tech, since it can't source unique features from common global tier-1 suppliers - all automakers now get the same tech. Germans suck at software (SAP is the best they can do, right?). It gave up investing in EV tech, and is now sucking up to Daimler to share autonomous development efforts.

AMG and Quadrifoglio now offer better performance sedans than ///M does.
So what's left?

Convertibles, maybe?

Trucks?

Just like in the E36 days I had an ///M (no badge), and my wife had a 328i.
Very few people, outside of BMW CCA membership base, could tell the two apart. There were a few subtle ways to differentiate the two, but most normal people couldn't.

Didn't bother me one bit.
I kinda loved it that way, actually.

Well said, I like both, for different reasons. Here's another one of my comparison videos for looks/layout. After owning the Tesla, I really don't miss all the buttons.

The Model 3 Performance is now approximately the same price as a AWD M340i. That's like M3 performance for M340i money. Oh boy...

It’s been that price for a while if all the credits and discounts are factored in.

Go for it man.

A friend just sold his 700hp e63 wagon to get a 3 Perfomance and he is loving the car. The only area the 63 was superior is 80+ mph highway pulls, but that wasn’t his use case very often. He’s loving the steering and tech and 0-80mph acceleration, like everyone else who has made the move over.

The new price for Model 3 Performance is $54,990 before incentives or about $50k with incentives which is 330i territory.

I've got both the Model 3 Performance and the M3. Both have their own ups and down. The model 3 is definitively faster on the acceleration all thanks to the instant torque. The M3 is just as fast but handles better and built better thanks to BMW quality control. I just love the simple interior of the Model 3 but also love all the carbon interior of the M3. Both cars are great and I will keep them for a very long time.

That's a true bargain in today's market.

M3/C63S/Giulia QF performance and luxury for $25+K less.

I have a G30 540, stumble on this thread, have to say if I have somewhere to charge consistently (NYC, my garage is 10 minutes walking and they just start to add electric charge this year) would have seriously consider Model 3 Performance or Model S

Or had I known G20 3 series is almost as big as E39 5 series probably just should have wait a bit and gotten M340i

Didn't it start at like $70k when it first came out?
Yeah or like $69k or something. Whoever paid that much is feeling ripped off though it's not a bad price compared to what the competition costs.

The sticker price of my car was $77k but I got $15k back ($10k government rebates, $5k refund from when the Perfomance pack became standard) so at $62k it’s pretty close to the current price of $58.5k ($61k sticker and $2.5k state rebate)

Not that different from, say, M4 getting zcp standard in recent years

I ran a P3d this morning from 70 to 110 on my stage 2 93 octane map and he pulled at first and it took me 40 mph to become dead even with him. Pretty quick car im impressed.

So the Tesla pulled until you hit 110?

It pulled a car instantly then I walked it playing catch up. I had a shift in between as well so that slowed things down a tad.

Take a look at a dyno of a m3p with speed instead of rpm.

I've seen that previously and can verify that the car's performance perfectly reflects that graph.

It's REALLY quick up to about 110 mph - after that, notsomuch.

Translation: In typical street situations, it's all but untouchable.

You got more pics of your M3P? Looks like from your avatar pic that you modified yours? I'm considering one, but torn about it.

Switched to Tesla Model 3 Performance

Hi guys,

After ten years of loyal BMW ownership I switched to Tesla. I’ve owned two E9x M3s, an X5M, and a 550i GT. I was also in the market for either an M3, M4, or X5M. But, I just got tired of all the service visits costing thousands of dollars, and I simply lost interest.

I test drove a Tesla Model 3 AWD in early July. A few seconds after pulling out of the dealership, I realized why the gasoline engine is being phased out. There was no reason to spend another minute in a car with tons of buttons that requires regular dealer visits for expensive routine maintenance and service. The electric car eliminates thousands of parts and potential issues, all in a tight package under a simple warranty.

These thoughts raced through my mind during my test drive. But the suspension seemed not as great, and the car was more comparable to, say, a 4 Series M sport than an M3. I then asked to drive the Model 3 Performance. It was comparable in so many ways to the M4. However, it had Porsche-Turbo-like acceleration and ungodly grip like race prepped AWD. The car was telepathic. I ordered one and got it two weeks ago.

The Model 3 Performance has everything I wanted in a car. It isn’t just fast, it is also extremely peaceful and takes the stress out of driving in traffic. Charging has not been an issue for me; I’ve even found lots of places to charge for free. Each day that passes by, I learn how to drive more efficiently in order to save battery charge, yet I still hit high speeds and have moments of crazy acceleration. I did the math, and in five years I will save close to $49k compared to the ownership experience I had with my old BMWs.

If any of you are toying with the idea of a Model 3 Performance, I suggest you at least take a test drive. You may end up loving it.

Holy crap, I’m assuming you had some major issues if you spent 49k in fuel and maintenance in 5 years on your BMW(s)?

I just traded in an M3 after 11.5 years of ownership and had spent about $3400(excluding fuel) over that time

It was a disaster. Everything always went wrong. And maintenance is crazy.

Electric was the right decision for me.

I went through the same process as you're apparently dealing with. Wondering whether I could be happy with an interior so different than the Audi interiors I'd enjoyed for 20 years, and whether the build quality would make me happy, again after 20 years of perfect panel gaps (if not perfect mechanical reliability in the earlier years).

At this point, after nearly 8 months of ownership those earlier concerns have disappeared. Are the panel gaps on my Model 3 as tight as those on the Audis? No, but they're extremely consistent. The interior is built very solidly, despite what the Tesla shorters and naysayers would have you believe. Everything feels good, the things that move do so with precision, and nothing flexes or feels flimsy. Most everyone who's been in the car sees quality and luxury, and that's what I see as well.
