I would do it. If anything it's likely to do a better job holding its value vs the e9x.
I actually bid on one an bringatrailer but lost out. I had planned on selling my e90 if I won. |

I can't for the life of me understand the obsession with the 1M. It has the same suspension as the e9x M3, but is A) uglier than any e9x M(I know, subjective) B) doesn't have an M engine C) wasn't available with the fairly unique CF roof. IMO, the M2 comp is just a better car---it's a real M car.

For the price delta between a mint (mid to low mile) 1M and your M3, you can put a ESS supercharger (or perhaps a Harrop SC) on and really change the attitude of the car. I realize you liked how nimble the 1 series was, but massive power in the M3 makes it feel more on the edge. The E9x chassis can handle the stock power without much drama, ad 200hp and it get interesting.
A second scenario would be a FBO OGM2 with a larger turbo upgrade. The M2C is a very heavy car and is still very expensive at this point. The OG M2 retains the nimble feel that the 1M has, but the N55 really needs to be modified to be at the level that moves my needle. Also the OGM2 can be found for a pretty reasonable price. I drove one for a few hours and it sure is a fun car, it just needed more power. For me the 1M's appeal is it's remarkable resale value. I would want to modify the 1M's N54 to the level of my past few N54's (135i & 335i) and that would impact the cars inherent value. Everyone has their own value system as it pertains to the characteristics of these cars as they evoke so much emotion. For me, I like a great handling car with big power. I also value aesthetics a great deal, so personally there is no real debate. The E9x are quite possibly the best looking M cars ever made. Far better looking than the 1M, OGM2 or M2C...

On the subject I think you need a Porsche in your life. Agree on an earlier suggestion, sell the STI, daily the M3 and then my addition would be to weekend a 911 997.2 S Or Cayman S! |
