F1 vs. IndyCar at COTA

COTA lap times:

F1: 1:32
IndyCar 1:46

I wouldn't say I was surprised, but I was like "Really? That slow?" when I saw that IndyCar is about 15 seconds slower than F1. Visually, IndyCar looks like they are like crawling on the circuit vs. F1 like zooming by.

It would be interesting to see how fast IndyCar is vs. Formula 3? It would be a bit embarrassing if it is slower.

Track record is 1:37.392 set by F-1 Mercedes. Indy Car Honda time was 1:45.4542. Not 15 secs different - try 8 secs.

No track limits for Indy weekend.

Hamilton’s pole lap was 1:32.2 last year. Will be about another second lower this year.

Power’s pole lap for Indycar was 1:46.0 without track limits.

So yes, almost 14 sec in full tilt mode.

Guess my reading is not as good as it should be - I am seeing Hamilton's pole lap as 1:37.392 min as I said in my previous post.

You are reading Hamilton's fastest RACE LAP time (1:37.392), not his pole time (1:32.237)

Your first link literally has the option to view the race lap record and pole record

IndyCar shouldn't be that slow but thanks for the Indy 500, IndyCar has to be slowed down otherwise it wouldn't be able to go around oval.

I was also surprised at how much slower it looked like they were going than F1. I know they are flying around the track - but most noticeably through the S's it looked like were crawling through them compared to how fast the F1 cars whip around there. Its not a dig at Indy - really enjoyed the race weekend out there - more that F1 has attained ludicrous speed.

I will say that it was a fun weekend & will definitely go back for the Indy series - racing was good & nice not to have to fight the crowd as much as F1. Also the Stadium Super Trucks alone are worth the price of admission.

IIRC, Indy cars have different aero packages depending on whether they are doing an oval or a road/street course.

And the road course aero isn't anywhere near as advanced as F1.

It's an odd comparison because they're both only as fast as their governing bodies allow them to be. No disputing that F1 is king though

Not really.
To keep speed down on the superspeedways, IndyCar limits maximum turbo boost on ovals (including the Indianapolis track).
Maximum Boost Pressure (above atmosphere): 1300 mbar (Superspeedways); 1400 mbar (Indianapolis 500 qualifying); 1500 mbar (short ovals, Road/Street Courses); 1650 mbar (Push-To-Pass)
Power: Estimated 550-700 horsepower, depending on turbo boost pressure used. Additionally things are changing for the 2021 season. The 2.2l engines get bumped to 2.4l increasing max horsepower to 900.

I think besides power, it's the underlying design will probably limit the overall speed. For example, IndyCar is a bit heavier vs. F1. Also even with more power, F1 will have faster cornering speed as well. Sure with extra power it will help, but overall, IndyCar will be slower because the design has to compromise for both road courses and ovals.

Go F1,, I love them,, there was a lot of talk of whether they were going to have the IndyCar series at Cota because of that reason, they knew the Formula One cars were faster. They were afraid it would upset the fans of the IndyCar series .

Never was a big fan of the IndyCar series I think the cars are kinda uguly .....

Look like bath tubs cut in half around the wheels.

Then you have NASCAR oh here comes the corner let’s go left another corner coming,,,, let’s go left oh no, let’s go left,,, boring..... LOL

Power to weight ratio.

What's more impressive is the Porsche 919's time at Spa vs. F1. Granted the 919 wasn't running regulation.

RIP Charlie.

Here's an interesting read. Marcus Ericsson compares the IndyCar and the F1.

So F1 is faster not just power. It has more cornering speed, more down force, and better braking ... and of course being lighter will help.

When it's considered that the entire Indy field could be run by the budget of the smallest F1 team it's not that bad of a deficit. As was stated earlier, they are both victims of the rulebooks.

Can you imagine how fast the F1 cars if the tire wars were still going on? Cut 6 seconds out of the time, easily.
