… why would anyone want a G87 over an e90M? Heavy, boring engine dynamics, styling by pep boys, dead steering, disposable. No part of me remotely has any desire for a G87.

E36 practicality with e38 weight 🤣

Sadly, it's the lightest new M car on offer today, at a mere 1650kg for carbon roof& seats variant. It's hard to find a nice E90.

Sounds like it’s time to not buy an M car, if buying a new car.

Don’t cancel that order. From everything I’ve heard and read about it, the G is fantastic to drive.

I honestly don’t see the point in the G87. The 6MT G87 weighs more than the 6MT G82 M4.. so what’s the point? Would much rather have the F87 or a E90 (lighter, more interesting engine, better steering).

Just kidding! I totally understand the desire to keep it spotless. I just gave up… Now I’m on a slippery slope to giving too little shits.
Haha, I totally get it. I recently got the clear bra re-done and new windshield because it was looking bad. Now it looks brand new again. No rock chips. But I was debating whether I wanted to spend so much to maintain the cosmetics. It is a lot of effort and money for maintenance. Money that can be spent on more seat time.

I've never owned a car so long before. 15 years and lots of happy miles. She deserves some TLC.

I agree on the M2. But even the newest E9x is 10 years old. Even if finding a nice one with low miles, age brings headaches - window regulators, body control module, bushings, etc, etc.

Unfortunately.

As you can see I still drive one... but even as a happy fix-it-myselfer I can see the grass being very green over there...

you mean 10 years old? So newer cars with a million sensors and all sorts of digital screens are more reliable? hmm maybe for the first few years. I rather have an out of warranty E chassis M car than any of these new M cars. Maybe with the exception of E60/E63 M5/M6

Just rolled over 200,000 miles this weekend in my 23 year old (e39) M5. Did the cooling system, resealed oil areas, and repaced every bushing/bearing/ball joint in the car at 125,000 miles (when they originally started showing signs of aging), so will ignore them till 250,000. Been pretty problem free. The key to happiness with higher mileage cars is replacing everything when you're in an area, rather than doing it piece by piece as they fail-- you'll always be fighting something that way.

... not that that strategy worked on my e9X, which I sold because I couldn't stand working on it at 110,000 miles. e60 M5 would almost certainly share the same fate, if we put real miles on it.

That may be a bigger part to what I was getting at than I said (or maybe even realized) - working on the E90 is just not enjoyable. Obviously I don’t expect the newer cars to be any better in that respect.

Interesting to know it’s that much better on the E39 M5. That was the main alternative I was considering.
