Oil at minimum level after 9L

Hi all,

Changed the oil two days ago and I’m getting a “oil at minimum level” warning.

I drained the old oil for about 50 minutes and used a baster to remove the excess oil from the oil filter housing.

Filled with 8.5L of Liqui Moly 10w60, received the minimum oil level warning, and topped up with an additional .5L to bring it to 9L. I’m worried putting more in will overfill, any ideas why I’d be at the minimum level with 9L put into the car?

At 9L it should be above min. I’d say you might have an oil level sensor on its way out.

That crossed my mind. Just odd that prior to draining my old oil, it was at the max level. Don’t know why it would be so different after adding the new oil.

So in my experience the oil sensor is shit until at operating temp for a minute or two. Try driving softly until at operating temp and park your car on a level surface and let it idle. Force an oil level measurement a few times via the BC stalk and cluster while idling. I’ve had mine say I’m low until the aforementioned process. If this doesn’t work I’d ask (not to be a dick), how sure are you about the oil bottle count? Still have them in the trash to count just to make sure?

Is that 9L or 9qt? I did an oil change recently and it took 9.5 bottles (9.5qt/9L) to get it to the middle of the gauge. I did suction out and clean off all of the old oil in the oil filter housing as well though.

I'd say monitor it the next couple days and try to force measure the oil level reading a few different times, on a level surface of course as Scippy had suggested above.

If it still reads low then, add oil in 1/4 bottle increments and monitor. It does take quite some time for smaller increments to register sometimes, so be sure not to over add.

I used 9L exactly, and let each bottle drain for awhile before moving onto the next. I used the oil change kit from FCP euro, which came with one 5 liter and four 1 liter bottles. I still have them in the garage.
I’m definitely worried to over add because I thought the max fill on these cars is 9L. But I will try the above mentioned methods to see if I can get a better reading.

Ok well that’s that. Easiest way to take around .45 of a liter is to suck out the contents of the oil filter housing. I have an over sized syringe made for Vegas poolside shots with a 4” piece of tube on the point for sucking out the oil 😂 Works like a charm and gives me a giggle every time. I can give a mm amount if I go look as it’s usually 2 1/2 full pulls.

I thought it had measurements on the side but it doesn’t. I get 2 1/2 of these out of the oil filter housing. 16 oz bottle for reference and the water is 2 1/2 fills from my extractor.

Appreciate all the help. Interestingly enough, I’m getting an almost max fill reading now without doing anything. Odd because it took 4 days to show a different reading, and I did plenty of driving those 4 days. At least I know I filled it correctly now

That’s exactly what happened to me just a couple weeks ago. I did my oil change and filled with 9L exactly and it read directly in the middle which was fine. But, typically it should read much higher than that close to full. I kept an eye on it and a few days later, the sensor reread and now reading near full.
