oil level sensor?

08 M3 had oil service done 6 months ago by GMP, last week started to show low oil level... no leaks of course
added a quart... no change, added a 2nd quart no change... waited several days and cold start this am i get a service message in the dash (between the analog gauges) and oil level looks even lower... no CEL. I havent let it reach temp and measured but a little worried aboout this new service message Im seeing

gotta get my Carly on to see if any errors, but does that sound like a sensor issue?

was gonna change the oil and replace the sensor
any advice is much appreciated

Just replaced mine for the same issues you are having. I didn't want to any risks leak or not about my oil level.

*Edit* It can take several cycles for the oil to register keep in mind. I topped mine off and it took a week of driving before the sensor identified the new oil. Still I replaced my sensor as these things are known to go bad.

If you replace the oil level sensor, stick with OEM. I replaced mine with a Vemo oil level sensor. On my last oil change the sensor was indicating oil level was full. For giggles I decided to measure how much came out. Only 7 quarts came out, WTF. I’m sure there was still a little more oil left in the sump as I didnt wait the suggested amount of time for it to drain. But, it should have indicated I was low. Next oil change I will replace with OEM oil level sensor.

It's situations like this where you can use data in INPA to actually review what the oil level is sensing.

I had similar issues with mine originally. Eventually the check engine light came on and oil sensor completely stopped reading. I was having my rod bearings done in the coming weeks at the time. Just had them swap the sensor (OEM
BMW-12617607910) while they did the service.

I've replaced three oil sensors, OEM, nothing really changes. Unless oil can reproduce themselves, I now have a reading of "MAX". Where does it come from? It was just fine until a few days ago. Same amount of oil [9 bottles with filter], it was just fine and now...
If you know you did good and there are no leaks, just forget about the insane oil level thingy.

Agree, however these engines are notorious for using oil. How are you supposed to know if you are low on oil if you dont monitor oil level? I wish BMW had put a dipstick in these cars.

You are absolutely right. But hey, a dipstick is just a few dollars. An oil level sensor on the other hand...

And now, oil level is back to normal.

I know it’s not cheap, but anyone try this kit out before?

From the BW website
"This package is sold as a parts kit – requires welding included threaded bung into your oil pan – for experienced welders only!"

Damn. I'd gladly pay that price for a dipstick. Not quite a simple DIY though unless you can weld.

Mine always show over full lately, even though I know we did the right amount of oil on the most recent oil change.

What gives……

They should offer an exchange pan with a core charge.

After further review, apparently they do. Price is with core charge included.

Is there a DIY for changing the oil level sensor?
