There are many threads about this already. Intercity Lines is consistently the front runner on the recommendations. They offer open and enclosed shipping options I believe. Maybe try a quick search, like entering "shipping company site:m3post.com" into Google.

+1 for Intercity. I used them to ship my car and was very happy. Reasonable pricing and great service.

Intercity gets my vote! I've shipped many cars, many places and Intercity has been the only one that has delivered and picked up my car when they said they would. Great communication from the drivers. I will only use them from now on.

Have used Plycar twice and intercity once for enclosed carrier transport across the US. Both did an excellent job. Plycar is a bit cheaper but the service between both is the same.

My experience with intercity was less than stellar. Firstly, I had a driver who was blaming me for the fact that he couldn't get his truck turned around in the place we arranged to meet. Is it my job to vet the pickup site? What do I care about his truck's turn radius?

Secondly, I literally got 2 hours notice before drop-off of my car at its destination.

Lastly, drop-off was several miles from my home on the interstate because -- again -- the driver was wary about driving his truck onto smaller roads.

Brand new cars are shipped to dealerships open. Enclosed is typically used only for vintage, classic, or exotic cars, but if you're willing to spend the cash, by all means. Otherwise, your car will certainly need a wash when it arrives, but it should otherwise be fine. Road debris shouldn't be an issue given that it will have a semi cab and/or another car in front of it the whole way.

It's crazy how these guys at Intercity get so much business even though they are crazy expensive. Check out Envision Auto http://wp.me/P2nhxm-4t

Cheaper and just as good!

Uship is ok also...but they charge their own fees, and you should definitely do your own research beyond their site alone for whatever company you pick...

So I'm on the search for company that can transport my car from Maryland to CA beginning of August. I was planning to do open, using your logic, but reading the fine print - insurance does NOT cover "acts of god". Meaning, hail (sp? ice pelets), flooding, etc. I know the chances of that happening are low, but weather is crazy these days, especially in the mid-west. Not sure I should take the risk with an open transport mode of transportation. Plus, dealerships can take the hit on one or a set of cars getting totalled - I can't and don't want to ake that risk!

Actually, if you read the fine print of your regular auto insurance policy, you may find similar wording in its exclusions list as well. Mine does not have such wording, but I did enjoy reading that it excludes damage due to "rebellion or revolution, insurrection, war (declared or undeclared), and discharge of a nuclear weapon, even if accidental."

But back on-topic, I am not an insurance/contract expert, but I believe a distinction is drawn between "regular" flooding/hail and "act of God" level of flooding/hail, so that wording wouldn't necessarily exclude any and all weather-related damage. And even if the carrier's policy really does exclude all weather-related damage, it's very possible that YOUR auto insurance will remain in effect while your car is being transported, and thus if that policy covers weather-related damage, you would be covered through them. But of course call them to confirm.
