Easy and Relatively Inexpensive Exhaust Mods?

Hi All:

I apologize for the naivety here, and I tried searching, but I'm not sure if I was able to come up with the best answer here.

I recently picked up an e92 M3 as a second car/daily and the first "real" mod outside of cosmetic things would be to make the exhaust just a bit louder. I LOVE the DCT (had this in my 335is and two F8x), but those v8 downshifts are new and INCREDIBLE.

However, I am just wondering if there is something to give the car just a *bit* more sound. I don't believe there are open/close valves on the e9x series, correct? So something like the BMS CANFLAP module that forces open the flaps on the F8x series wouldn't do anything. Is there otherwise a OBD/OBDII port module that gives the car some extra sound by opening up something in the computer?

Otherwise, I may be looking at a relatively inexpensive new exhaust down the road.

Only real necessity is that it has to pass CA smog (and this is fine, since I really don't need anything insanely loud).

Thank you all in advance!

Google "M3 OEM exhaust mod." Pretty inexpensive for the result.

Is that this one: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=600992

Looks like they open up the exhaust, take out some sound deadening stuff, and then weld it back?

So long as this would continue to pass smog, honestly might be the move (basically just pay a shop for labor).

There is a so-called "two-pipe" mod and then the so-called "ACM mod."

The two-pipe mod involves replacing two of the perforated pipes with solid and then welding together. The ACM mod replaces all the pipes; basically bypasses the resonance chamber of the muffler completely.

I did the two-pipe. One can go light on the pedal and it's completely quiet or get on it a little and make a bit more sound. No resonance either. Too quiet for some; I feel it has a great balance of improved sound and NVH with being respectful of others.

I have the 4 pipe and it's perfection. Downshifts are brutal. At WOT, it sonds like a v8 F1 car. Cold start in the morning (echoing int he garage no less) scares the neighborhood. I want to delete secondary cats, but then it'll be too much. 2 pipe mod with primary or secondary cat delete would be perfect I bet, if you want to delete cats and tune for more power. I'm just after sound.

Thank you both for the info!

Definitely more after sound than a bump in performance. As this is really going to be my daily when the new G80 comes, I also want to make sure that it will continue to pass smog here in California.

That's why I just did the 4 pipe mod. Sounds like I spent thousands of dollars, but it's still stock.

As long as you keep the primary and secondary cats you will be able to pass CA smog check. You can replace the muffler or mod the stock muffler and that will not affect a smog check. I have a CF intake plenum and ran the Evolve E-tronic muffler and passed smog with no issues.
